This is a list of major cities - centers of major metropolitan areas, state capitals, and other significant U.S. cities by the year of their first European settlement (most sites of major cities in the United States were inhabited already by Native Americans, but finding the exact year for the first indigenous inhabitation is impossible) and when they were legally incorporated as a city.
