Estefannie Gutierrez de la Garza is a Mexican software engineer, inventor, TV host, and content creator based in the United States. [1] [2] [3] She is best known for her YouTube and Instagram channels on computer science, technology, and engineering. She is also a co-host of the TV show Mark Rober's Revengineers, co-starring Mark Rober, Allen Pan, and Thea Ulrich.
Estefannie was born and raised in Mexico. Despite not initially being interested in programming, Estefannie's passion for engineering began to grow during her college years. [4] [1] Estefannie graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in computer science and a minor in mathematics from the University of Houston. [5] [3] [6]
While studying for her degree, she founded the non-profit organization Computer Science Girls at the University of Houston to create opportunities and help further the careers of women and underrepresented groups interested in computer science and technology. [7] [8] [9] [10]
Estefannie worked for seven years as a software engineer, including three years as a software engineering lead. [11]
Estefannie is an active member of the science and maker community. She planned and hosted Science Hack Day at the Houston Museum of Natural Science in 2015 and 2016, where local scientists, engineers, programmers, and artists collaborated in a 48-hour hackathon to explore the intersection of science, art, and technology. [12] [13]
Since 2016, Estefannie has been chronicling her experiences as a software engineer on Instagram, ultimately inspiring her to launch her YouTube channel. [1] [14] Initially focused on computer science and coding tutorials, she's since shifted her content towards creating innovative engineering projects and do-it-yourself gadgets. [11] [1] [15]
As a technology enthusiast and maker, Estefannie's social media channels have gained significant traction thanks to her content showcasing her love for cutting-edge tech and DIY culture. Her projects have been highlighted in prestigious publications such as Harper's Bazaar. [16], The Daily Planet [17], Elite Daily [11], Hackster.io [18] [19] [20], Hackaday [21] [22], HackSpace Magazine [23] [3], and also The MagPi Magazine [24] [3]
In 2022, Estefannie premiered the YouTube video for one of her larger robot projects - a machine learning invention she had spent two years perfecting. Inspired by her plastic-eating Persian cat, Teddy Bear, she designed an AI litter box to detect when either of her pets went to the bathroom, with the ability to differentiate between the two felines and track their habits. [25] Some online publications, omitting her name from their reviews, simply referred to her as "a woman online," [26] [27] [28] a label that Estefannie has since embraced and proudly adopted on Twitter.
As a public speaker and diversity advocate in the technology industry, Estefannie has been vocal about creating inclusive spaces for all. [29] [2] Her unwavering commitment to the cause has driven her to inspire and motivate young individuals through live stream giveaways, talks, and workshops at schools and universities, to consider pursuing careers in technology and STEM. [3] [2]
In October 2021, Estefannie was invited to speak on a panel at the Engage Summit in Washington, D.C. [30] In front of an audience that included Members of Congress, Administration Officials, Corporate Executives, and Leading Policy Experts, Estefannie shared her experiences as a BIPOC woman in STEM, emphasizing the importance of a diverse and inclusive workforce. Held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Engage Summit served as a platform to promote women's economic security by fostering discussions on critical policy issues.
Estefannie will be co-hosting a new TV show called Mark Rober's Revengineers, set to premiere on April 20th, 2023, on the Discovery Channel.
