Claiborne High School, named after William C. C. Claiborne, is a public high school in New Tazewell, Tennessee, USA. It is one of three high schools in Claiborne county, being the most populated of the three. The school currently enrols approximately 700 students, with a 1:15 teacher to student ratio. [2]

Academics

Claiborne High School offers a wide range of courses, including courses for agriculture, landscaping management, and masonry. [3]

Claiborne High School statistically underscores the state average in math proficiency but meets state standards for reading and writing proficiency.

The school has a higher percentage of low-income households than the state and country averages. Over half of the school, estimated 72% of all students, have free or reduced lunches [4]. As of at least 2018, the school has made lunches and breakfast free to all students, irregardless of family income. [5]

Athletics

Claiborne High School offers lots of athletic programs, including football, basketball, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, tennis, golf, wrestling, dance, and track. The school does not offer boys volleyball or girls football. [6] The school is most known for their football team, the Bulldogs, who routinely get featured in local newspapers, often tracking their scores throughout the seasons. [7]

Controversies

In 2018, the former principal of Claiborne High School, T.J. Sewell, was investigated for misconduct due to claims by the schools maintenance faculty that he used them to tend to his farm. The staff claimed that during work hours he had them fix his truck, haul his cattle, run non-school related errands, and multiple other forms of care for his farm. He was also accused of abusing the schools tax exemption for personal shopping and for potentially pocketing profits from the schools coffee shop. The former principal was tried in a grand jury for misconduct but was not charged. [8]

In 2021, Timothy Munsey, a teacher at Claiborne High School was fired and charged with theft for repeatedly stealing school-owned computers to sell at local pawn shops. [9]
