Bogomir Doringer ( Belgrade, Serbia, 1983) is a Serbian/Dutch artist, curator, filmmaker and researcher.
Biography
Bogomir Doringer first studied sociology at the University of Belgrade. Later, moving to Amsterdam, he studied fine art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (graduating in 2008) before completing a Master of Film at the Netherlands Film Academy (graduating in 2011 with Cum Laude). [1] He is currently participating in a PhD program at the University of Applied Arts Vienna with his work "I Dance Alone". [1]
Bogomir Doringer observes how the ritual of dancing and masking appears in contemporary times and what functions it has in our society. [2] His ongoing research project, "I Dance Alone," captures nightlife spaces from a bird's eye, examining the significance of people's dances. [3] His doctoral artistic research in practice at the University of Applied Arts Vienna resulted in coining "Dance of Urgency," [4] a term which, according to Doringer, encapsulate dances emerging in times of personal and collective crisis, serving as a source of empowerment for individuals and groups.
Projects and Exhibitions
Bogomir Doringer is an international speaker, lecturer, teacher, curator, and part of the curator team at the Nxt Museum [5] (Amsterdam, Netherlands).
Doringer's work "Hospitality" (2009-2017) [6] was twice nominated for the Venice Biennale to represent Serbia. In 2018, Doringer began a series of international exhibitions titled "FACELESS", which tackled the masking ritual after 9/11. This work was documented in Doringer's book FACELESS: Re-inventing Privacy Through Subversive Media Strategies, [7] published by the University for Applied Arts Vienna and Social Design Arts as Urban Innovation department.
Since 2020, Doringer has acted as head curator of Nxt Museum. In this period, he has launched 3 exhibitions, including "Shifting Proximities" [8] (2020-2022 alongside Jesse Damiani), as well as "UFO - Unidentified Fluid Other" [9] (2022-2023). For the exhibition "Life in a Different Resolution", [10] Doringer has selected artworks from the studio's extensive twenty years of production.
In 2021 Doringer contributed to the “Nachtvisie Amsterdam”, a publication commissioned by the Amsterdam municipality with the aim to investigate the value of the Amsterdam night life. [11]
In 2022, Doringer curated "No Dancing Allowed" [12] at Q21 in the MuseumsQuartier [13] of Vienna as a follow-up to the “Dance of Urgency” exhibition from 2018.
In 2023, Doringer’s research on his project “Dance of Urgency” was published in the Stiftung Genshagen & ERSTE Foundation publication “Europe: United in_equality?” [14] which is part of the “#EUmeetsEurope –A Transdisciplinary Approach to European Integration” program.
