Annie Nero (born October 9, 1980) is an American musician [1] who has contributed vocals and/or played bass on more than 34 studio albums. [2]

Musical Career

Nero attended State University of New York (SUNY) in New Paltz, NY where she met collaborator and future husband Josh Kaufman. They became founding members of the country-pop band Balthrop Alabama in 2006 and appear on the 2007 album Your Big Plans And Our Little Town and the 2010 EPs Country Songs and Subway Songs. [3] Nero also joined the alt-pop band Ladystein in 2006 [4] which released the album It's Ladystein in 2008. [5] In 2009, she joined the band Yellowbirds and played bass and sang back-up vocals for singer-songwriter Dawn Landes on the album Sweetheart Rodeo. [6] Nero, Landes, and Balthrop Alabama member Lauren Balthrop formed the pop trio The Bandana Splits; their debut album was released by Boy Scout Recordings in 2011 [7] followed by a holiday album in 2015 which was borne out of their annual performances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's tree lighting. [8]The trio also sang back-up on Bob Weir's 2016 solo album, Blue Mountain. [9] In 2015, Nero and Kaufman, along with other collaborators, formed the band A Nero and released the album Hysterical Fiction. [10] In 2016, Nero formed the Brooklyn-based ensemble I Get Wild which performs the work of Talking Heads. [11] Kaufman has recruited Nero as a session bassist and vocalist on a number of albums he produced [12], including the Hold Steady's 2019 Thrashing Through the Passion [13], 2021 Open Door Policy [14] and 2023 The Price of Progress [15] as well as Fruit Bat's 2020 The Pet Parade [16]and Muzz's self-titled 2020 album. [17]
