Yuval Etgar (born 8 June 1984) is a curator and oxford university scholar on the subject of collage history and theory as well as other methods of appropriation in modern and contemporary art.
Education and career
Born and raised in Jerusalem, son of Raphie Etgar a prominent curator. He holds a B.A. degree in History and Philosophy from the Tel Aviv University, an M.A. in Curating Contemporary Art from the Royal College of Art, London, and a DPhil from the Ruskin School of Art, University of Oxford.
Etgar’s first book, The Ends of Collage, came out in 2017 alongside an exhibition of the same name, constituting the first and only comprehensive anthology of writings on the subject of collage history and theory to date. [1] Widely published, Etgar’s books on the subject also include Vitamin C+. Collage in Contemporary Art, [2] Man Ray: Other Objects, [3] Out of Order: The Collages of Louise Nevelson, [4] as well as a monographic study on the life and work of the British artist John Stezaker - John Stezaker: At the Edge Of Pictures. [5] [6]
As a curator, since 2016 Etgar has been affiliated with the London and New York based gallery, Luxembourg + Co., where he organised exhibitions of Paul Cézanne, René Magritte, Man Ray, Sue Fuller, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Jake and Dinos Chapman, and John Stezaker, among others. [7]
In 2019, Etgar was appointed Curator of the Bauhaus Foundation Tel Aviv, and in 2022 he re-joined the Ruskin School of Art as a Visiting Tutor. [8] Etgar is also the editor in chief of the annual publication Conversations, a platform for contemporary art practitioners to discuss the historical events, tendencies and individuals that were formative to their work. [9]
The Ends of Collage
This extensive anthology includes key writings by scholars and artists from the 1930s onwards as well as a comprehensive introductory essay by Etgar, discussing whether collage should be regarded as a term that is inherently linked to the age of mechanical reproduction. In order to analyse this argument, Etgar looks closely at two pivotal moments in the history of collage: The adoption of this practice by the European Avant-Garde around the 1910s, and a series of rebellions against it in the late 1970s, most notably associated with the so-called The Pictures Generation artists in North America. The book was published by Luxembourg & Dayan in 2017 and was accompanied by a widely reviewed exhibition and a series of lectures in various academic and art institutions. [10] [11] [12]
