The St. Pauls Avenue-Stapleton Heights Historic District is a historic district in Staten Island, New York (4).The historic district consists of standalone Victorian houses (1).One of the oldest houses in the district is the house at 172 St. Pauls Ave, which was built in 1831 in the Greek revival style (1).Some notable houses in the district are 387 St Pauls Ave and 396 St. Pauls Ave. The later was built in circa 1850s and was significantly redesigned circa 1885 and additions were added in the early twentieth century. During these renovations the houses promintent tower was added (1). 387 St. Pauls Ave, known as the Weirderer house, was built in 1887 (3).This house is the poster child of Staten Island Victorian houses (3).This Queen Anne Revival house was built by George Betchel for his daughter Anna (3). Anna and her husband Leonard Weirderer lived in the house until 1891 when Leonard passed away (3). Anna moved to Germany, so the house passed to George Betchel’s widow Eva (3). Betchel had died in 1889. Eva had taken charge of George’s brewing company with the intrests of her 13 year old son in mind (3).Eva continued to occupy her and her late husband’s home on Van Duzer St (3). Anna’s sister Agnes moved in circa 1899 and lived in the house until the 1920s (3).The house is known for it’s use of geometric shapes in it’s design and it’s imposing tower (1).The mansion has been meticulously maintained and is a notable example of the queen Anne Revival style (2).The house was designed by Hugo Kafka (1).The district runs along St Pauls ave, with some buildings in the district being on Occident Ave, Sunrise Terrace, Trossach Road, Willow St, Stone St, Beach St, Cebra Ave, Marion Ave, Pommer Ave, Dyson St, Taxter Pl, Clinton St and Paxton St (5).Some notable churches in the district include Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church and St Pauls Episcopal Church.
