Smooth-On, Inc. is a chemical manufacturing company based in Macungie, Pennsylvania that produces polyurethanes, silicone rubbers, and epoxy resins which are sold to domestic and international customers.
Smooth-On, Inc. is a privately owned US-based manufacturer of liquid rubbers, plastics, adhesives, and expanding foams. These materials are commonly used for mold making, resin casting, composite manufacturing, and industrial repair. Materials manufactured by Smooth-On are used in many applications including sculptural arts [1], medical simulation [2], robotics [3], special effects [4], cosplay [5] [6], mining, and concrete casting.
Smooth-On, Inc. was founded in 1895 by Vreeland Tompkins in Jersey City, New Jersey (then as Smooth-On Manufacturing Company). In 1895 Tompkins devised a powder compound that when mixed with water could be used to repair cracks and holes in iron. Marketed as Iron Cement, later iterations were formulated with solvents that would evaporate when heated or exposed to air. [7]
In the 1950's Smooth-On pivoted to production of epoxy resins and polysulfides. [8] [9] It relocated its manufacturing facilities to a larger site in Gillette, New Jersey in 1967 to increase production capacity. [10] In the 1970's Smooth-On began formulating polyurethane rubbers and plastics. [11]
In 1997 manufacturing was moved to Easton, Pennsylvania and in 2014 to Macungie, Pennsylvania. [10]
Since the early 1990's, Smooth-On has grown through acquisitions of similar specialty chemical formulary manufacturers and distributors.
