Shuying Li (born November 24, 1989, in China) is a Chinese-American composer who lives in Sacramento, California. Praised as "a real talent" by The Seattle Times [1] and recognized for her "vivid, dramatic" scores by San Francisco Chronicle, [2] Shuying composes for orchestras, wind bands, chamber music, and opera.

Early Life and Education

Shuying Li began musical education in her native China. In her sophomore year at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, she won a scholarship to continue study at the The Hartt School, University of Hartford in Connecticut. Shuying later obtained her master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Michigan. [3] [4] Her composition teachers include Michael Daugherty, Evan Chambers, Larry Alan Smith, Robert Carl, and Ye Guohui.

Academic Career

In 2020, Shuying joined the faculty at Gonzaga University as an Assistant Professor, where she taught and directed the Composition/Music Theory Program. [5] In 2022, she became an Assistant Professor and Head of Composition at California State University, Sacramento, teaching composition and music theory. [6] [7]

Composition Career

In 2017, Shuying made her Carnegie Hall debut when Orpheus Chamber Orchestra premiered the commissioned work, "Out Came the Sun," which received critical acclaim by various music critics. [8] [9] Shuying's compositions have been performed by numerous ensembles and orchestras, including:

Shuying's opera, "When the Purple Mountains Burn," with a libretto by Julian Crouch, received an OPERA America Discovery grant in 2021 [17] and was workshopped at the Houston Grand Opera in 2022. Excerpts of the opera were presented by West Edge Opera in 2023. [18]

Four Corners Ensemble

In 2017, Shuying founded the nonprofit organization and chamber music ensemble, Four Corners Ensemble, serving as its Artistic Director. Shuying also established the Operation Opera Festival in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which has become an annual event for composers, vocalists, and pianists to collaborate on new chamber operas and art songs. [19] [20] The ensemble's debut album, "World Map," featuring Shuying's chamber concertos, received acclaim from Gramophone. [21] The concerto series' orchestra version was premiered by The Chelsea Symphony in the Merkin Hall at Kaufman Music Center in May 2023 by soloists from the Four Corners Ensemble. [22]
