Security Monitoring Centre is a global operating Alarm Receiving Center specialised in oversighting and safeguarding of security-related operations for various organization and indiviuals, and is a subsidiary of Chubb Fire & Security.

History

In 1938, Mr. Mountstephen designed and built a machine that, when activated, automatically dialed the police emergency service and played a recorded message identifying the location of the premises. As external sounders were not used, this machine made possible an effective "silent alarm," resulting in a very successful arrest rate for the police.

Because it used ordinary telephone speech lines, the costs were considerably less than the Central Station method. The system was marketed under the name of Burgot Alarms. It was said that many a burglar caught in the act could not understand how the police had been tipped off. Assuming an accomplice was responsible, the arrested burglar informed on those whom he thought were responsible. Although several such systems were installed before the 2nd World War, it was not until the late 1940s and 1950s that Burgot became a serious competitor. Burglary was increasing as a direct result of men being released from the military after the war, some of whom, having had experience with explosives and cutting equipment, put these skills to the pursuit of obtaining ill-gotten gains. Subsequently, there was a lot of work for installers of intruder alarms in that period. [1]

In 1948, Burgot was acquired by Radio Rentals and traded as Burgot Rentals Ltd. Radio Rentals was an organization that specialized in renting radios and televisions. It is likely that Radio Rentals saw the security business as another form of rental business. Radio Rentals decided in 1958 to concentrate on their core business, and they sold the security business, which became Burgot Automatic Alarms Ltd in 1962 after its acquisition by Chubb Security. [1] [2] Chubb Group, including Burgot, was bought by Racal Electronics in August 1984, from which it was demerged in September 1992. Burgot continued after August 1995 as Security Monitoring Centre (SMC) [3] before being acquired by Williams Holdings, together with Chubb Group in February 1997. As the latter company sought to build a security-focused conglomerate It was again demerged in July 2000. [4]

In April 2003, Chubb and it's security businesses were acquired for £622m by United Technologies Corporation. [5]

In 2020, Chubb and it's security businesses were spun off with the rest of UTC Climate, Controls & Security into a separate company, Carrier Global. [6]

On 3 January 2022 it was announced that Carrier Global had sold Chubb and it's security businesses to APi Group for US$ 3.1 billion. [7]
