Saint Celine of Laon – born in the Laonnois region in the 5th century and died around 464, is primarily known for being the mother of Saint Remigius. She is also considered the mother of Principius, the twelfth bishop of Soissons. A saint herself, her feast day is on October 21st.
Celine was the daughter of Syagrius of Soissons (commander of Roman troops and governor of Gaul) or Jovinus of Reims. It is known that her father came from Gallo-Roman nobility. She married a count from Laon, Emilius, who was older than her and already had children: Principa, Agricola, Pretextatus, Aetius, Loup, and grandchildren.
In her advanced age, praying fervently, she gave birth to Remigius, whose future birth as the bishop of Reims was foretold by the hermit Montanus, from the forest of La Fère: "The Lord has deigned to look upon the earth from the heights of heaven, so that all the nations of the world may proclaim the wonders of His power and that kings may deem it an honor to serve Him: Celine will be the mother of a son who will be named Remi; I will use him for the deliverance of my people."
The child was born and baptized Remedius (or Remigius), because he was to cure many ills in his life, which later gave him the name Remi.
She had two other sons, who also dedicated themselves to the priesthood, Agricola and Principius, who would become the bishop of Soissons.
Celine died at a very old age and was buried in Lavergny, near Laon. She is celebrated on October 21st.
