Located in the central area of Bangalore, India, at the crossroads of Richmond Road and Mother Teresa Road, Sacred Heart Church stands as a notable Roman Catholic sanctuary. [1] [2]
The Bangalore Archdiocesan Priests’ cemetery is situated in the premises of Sacred Heart Church, Richmond Road. [3] [4]
Father August Chevalier, a French Catholic priest from the Paris Foreign Mission Society, founded Sacred Heart Church in a small cottage on Victoria Road in 1876.
Subsequently, a new church was constructed on Richmond Road near to the Archdiocesan Priests' Cemetery. The parish priest at the time, Rev. Fr. Jean-Marie Combret, finished building the church in 1895. [5]
• The Sacred Heart Church is built in French-Gothic architecture with decorative twin-spires and high-arched rib-vaulted interior.
• Stained glass windows over the sanctuary depicting the Sacred Heart, Mary & Joseph. [6]
• The pillars of the Church are decorated with Corinthian-style carvings.
• The main altar comprises three beautiful statues: Mary Immaculate, Saint Joseph and Jesus displaying His Sacred Heart.
• Two massive bronze Church bells, specially brought from Italy in 1894. [7]
• Roman-style side altars [8]
• The building is characteristic of solid blocks of granite rock, marble interiors, beautifully sculpted statutes. [9]
