R.P.S. Lanrue was a German-French guitarist. He was member of the political band Ton Steine Scherben, one of the most influencial political rock bands in Germany.
R.P.S. Lanrue was born as Ralph Peter Steitz. The family of R.P.S. Lanrue moved from France to Germany and lived in Nieder-Roden in Hesse. Rio Reiser's family also lived there. In January 1966, R. P. S. Lanrue asked Rio Reiser if he wanted to sing in his band Beatkinks. This mainly covered beat music. In the same year they both founded the rock band De Galaxis, in which they also played their own songs.
Lanrues main instrument was the drum set. In 1967 Lanrue moved to West-Berlin and started to play guitar. In this time he get his french name "Lanrue" given by Manfred Lehmann, an actor of the Berlin Forum-Theater. „Lanrue“ is a joke of „de la rue“ (from the street). In this time he began to start usinging his initiales R. P. S. and Lanrue.
Rio Reiserand Lanrue moved to West-Berlin like many young people at this time, because West-Berlin had an status of „demilitarization“, so there was no army service and no Bundeswehr in the city. This was particularly urgent for the French citizen Lanrue, as there was no conscientious objection in France.
In 1969, Lanrue and Reiser wrote one of their most famous songs for the tehater play “Rita and Paul”: “Destroy what destroys you.” (Macht kaputt, was Euch kaputt macht). Shortly afterwards in 1970, Reiser and Lanrue founded Ton Steine Scherben with bassist Kai Sichtermann and drummer Wolfgang Seidel. Over the years there have been numerous changes, breaks and changes in the band's line-up. Reiser and Lanrue were the head of composition and song writing. Both were the core band members from the founding 1970 till the end in 1985. [1] [2]
In April 2014 Lanrue formed a formation which also called themselv Ton Steine Scherben and went on torney in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The band was featuerd by Blumentopf, Frittenbude, Madsen, Max Prosa and Sebastian Krumbiegel. [3]
Lanrue lived in Portugal for several years. His belongings there fell victim to forest fires in 2004. Later he lived again for some time on the farm in Fresenhagen, the band's former home in North Frisia, Schleswig-Holstein. He left the farm again in 2009 and last lived in Berlin, where he succumbed to the effects of cancer in July 2024 at the age of 74. [4]
