Launched by ProZ.com in 2022, [1] ProZ Pro Bono is a non-profit philanthropic initiative that helps non-profit non-profit organizations and humanitarian causes in need of translation and interpreting services on a volunteer basis.

The program aims to bridge linguistic gaps for those who might otherwise struggle to provide or gain access to essential information and services by fostering a global community of dedicated volunteer professional translators and interpreters. The freelance professionals who make up this network volunteer their time and skills to support a variety of humanitarian causes. Proz Pro Bono uses a peer review system for quality management. The translation and interpretation work is performed by language professionals who are registered members of ProZ.com.

Clients and Impact

ProZ Pro Bono serves non-profit organizations worldwide, allowing them to address multilingual communities and allocate their resources to their primary missions. They have offered language support to many small to large-scale non-profit humanitarian organizations including International Rescue Committee [2], Progressive International [3], UN, Choosing Earth [4], Wiki Med Project, Ma Petite Planète, UNICEF, Earth Hero, Give Directly, Treetops Collective, SOS Children's Villages and Aid Global. [5]

Since its inception in 2022 [6], ProZ Pro Bono has translated 7 million words (as of June 2024) [7] in various fields, including thought and opinion, health, environment, society and conflict, children and education, women and girls, international development, and refugee assistance. [8]

Global Reach and Operations

The ProZ Pro Bono Program operates globally. Language professionals and non-profit organizations from various regions are connected through the program. The virtual nature of ProZ.com allows for cross-border collaboration, enabling volunteers to offer their services and beneficiaries to request assistance regardless of geographical location. This is an ongoing initiative, with participation possible throughout the year. Language professionals can volunteer at any time, and non-profit organizations or individuals in need can submit requests whenever necessary. This flexibility enables immediate responses to urgent language-related needs.
