Paul Werner Glaser (born 14 December 1963) is an international theater director, writer, and composer.
He is currently the Managing and Artistic Director of The English Theatre of Hamburg, "Germany’s oldest professional English language theatre." [1]
In November 2023, Glaser received the Theaterpreis Hamburg – Rolf Mares , for his The English Theater production of The Pride, a play by Alexi Kaye Campbell, "... celebrating the diversity and openness of society, which needs to be defended today more than ever." [2]
Glaser was born in 1963 in Uppsala, Sweden. Born into a family of music and theater in Uppsala, Sweden [3], Glaser's grandfather was German-Swedish composer, conductor, pianist, and poet Werner Wolf Glaser. His uncle is Swedish actor and director Etienne Glaser
In 1999 Glaser wrote and directed his first musical Peggy. It premiered at the Star Theatre in Hamburg and is published by Concord Theatricals. [4]
In 2016, Glaser staged his London West End Director's debut with his production of American playwright Stephen Dolginoff's musical Thrill Me, at the Jermyn Street Theatre. [5]
Between early 2016 and 2019 Glaser composed music for six German-language family musicals, with book and direction by Christian Berg (Autor) : Vom Fischer und Seiner Frau, [6] Das Gespenst von Canterville, [7] Rapunzel, [8] Bambi, [9] Frau Holle, [10] and Das Phantom von Opa. [11]
He also composed music for the London production of Mary Stuart, a play originally by Friedrich Schiller. [12]
In 2017, Glaser joined The English Theatre of Hamburg as Artistic Director. Since taking on his position, Glaser has produced and directed a series of new adaptations of British and U.S. plays, including The Picture of Dorian Gray, [13] The Pride, [14] Moonlight and Magnolias, [15] I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, [16] Apologia, [17] The Woman in Black, [18] and Death Knell. [19]
In 2022, Glaser wrote and directed his stage adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel Great Expectations which premiered at The English Theatre of Hamburg in the same year. "Far and Away" is the song written by Glaser specifically for this production. [20]
In 2023, Glaser directed his new stage adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's crime novel The Hound of the Baskervilles. [21]
Paul Glaser is married to Petter Bjällö . He has one son, with Ingela Santesson, who is the mother of Awa Santesson-Sey, the winner of the Swedish 2012 TV production of The X Factor. [22] His son is married, with three children.
