NYARUGENGE DISTRICT HOSPITAL Information

Nyarugenge District Hospital [1] is a local health facility located in the City of Kigali. The hospital is located at KN 247 Street located in Nyarugenge District, Nyamirambo Sector, Cyivugiza Cell, Mpano Village. Nyarugenge District Hospital served as a National COVID-19 treatment center from January to October 2021, when the COVID-19 Pandemic was at its peak [2] [3] [4].

Background

Constructed with the help of the Belgian Kingdom through Ubuzima Burambye project [5] [6], the hospital was established to give access to healthcare services to different people in Kigali. [7] [8] [9]

Nyarugenge District Hospital is one among other urban realization of the District Hospital Design developed by Model of Architectual Serving Society (MASS) Design with Rwanda's Ministry of Health. With such realization, other Hospitals were built, including Munini District Hospital [10] [11]. The hopital is supposed to be a 300 bed complex, of which the first phase of 120 beds have been completed and is in operations since 2020. [12] [13] [14].

Facilities

Nyarugenge District Hospital is set to be a 300 bed hospital [15]. Operating since 2020, the currently completed complex consists of a 120 bed facility with expansion works planned [16] [17]. The construction of the hospital started in 2018 [18] [19] Available departments include the Outpatient Department, Emergency, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Maternity, Pediatrics and Neonatology. Futher, the complex contains two operating rooms, a Pharmacy, a Laboratory, a Dental care Unit, an Ophralmology clinic, amedical imaging room and a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The hospital is also operated using OpenClinic, a hospital and clinic management system [20]

Services

Nyarugenge District Hospital offers a range of services. Children and adult healthcare services are offered by the hospital. The hospital has an outpatient department which offers general consultations for people that don't really need to be hospoitalized [21]. The hospital also offers Gyneco-obstetrical services [22]. The hospital has also an emergency department that offers emergency healthcare services to people in critical conditions and accidents victims [23]. Pediatric services are also available within the hospital, along neonatal care [24]. A bunch of other healthcare services are also offered by the hospital, including TB screening and treatment, Vaccination and immunization, family planning, Nutrition, Phsyiotherapy, medical imaging, lab examination, mental health, eyecare, and dental therapy among others [25]

Management

The hospital's organizational structure is designed and approved by the Ministry of Health. The structure is divided into four administrative Unities that include the Director General's Office, the Medical and Allied Health Sciences Services Unit, the Nursing and Midwifery Unit and the Administration and Finance Unit. Each Unit is Headed by the Director. Under the Unit can be different departments headed by Head of Departments. The hospital is led by the Director General. [26].

COVID-19

Nyarugenge District Hospital served as a National treatment Center for COVID-19 cases when the pandemic was at its peak. The hospital's service as a COVID-19 treatment center lasted for 10 months from January 08, 2021 to November 01, 2021 [27] [28] [29] [30] [31] [32]
