Investing in Africa Mining Indaba (MI) part of Hyve Group PLC is an annual mining conference held in Cape Town, South Africa which was first held in 1994. [1]
With over 8,000 delegates attending it is considered the largest investment event in Africa, bringing together mining companies, investors, government officials and industry experts in debates and discussions that attempt to influence the mining future of Africa. [2] [3]
The conference embraced it's 30th anniversary in 2024. [10]
Starting 1994, MI has since transformed into one of the world’s largest mining investment conferences [11], second only to The Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) International Convention, Trade Show & Investors Exchange. Indaba is Zulu/ Xhosa for a conference of izinDuna or leaders. [12]
The event was early enough in 2020 not to be impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the Cape Town in-person conference was cancelled in 2021 and reverted to a virtual platform during the worst of the Pandemic due to the severe travel restrictions and national border closures. [13] By 2022 the conference was pushed forward to May as global travel restrictions began to ease significantly by then and attendance was record-breaking. [14] Subsequently, the conference was moved back to the usual dates in February by 2023 as international travel began to normalise. [15]
As of 2024, a premium three-day pass as a delegate to the conference could cost up to GBP£1,732 + 15% VAT, while a one-day pass was around GBP£250. Government officials, the press and investors attend free of charge. There were concessions for students in 2023 however there has been no accommodation for community members to attend despite requests by mining-affected community members [16]
In the post-pandemic conference the MI sustainability committee began to present Junior ESG awards judged by industry peers and sponsored by Onyen, a Canadian ESG Reporting Software provider, to recognise and encourage positive impacts relating to sustainable development by Junior miners. In preparation for MI24 the awards were rebranded as the Responsible Resourcing Awards for the following nine categories: [14] [17] [18]
MI's platform for junior mining companies enable them to pitch against each other to learn more about investor requirements and receive feedback on their pitches [34]
