Marc Hervieux is a Canadian opera singer and tenor. He was born in Montreal, Quebec on June 19, 1969.

Biography

Youth and education

Marc Hervieux was born in Montréal in the neighbourhood of Hochelaga-Maisonneuve. His father worked as a labourer in the St. Lawrence Sugar Factory. Hervieux discovered opera while watching shows by Yoland Guérard. He was introduced to the theatre along with his brother through an amateur theatre troupe and also beginning singing at the same time. His father discouraged Hervieux from pursuing a career in acting and instead he enrolled in a cegep programme at Collège Ahuntsic. There he studied graphic communication, but he abandoned his studies before finishing them and opened a graphics studios. He dedicated himself to music, singing a group called La Gang de chums. [1]

In 1991, Marc Hervieux, encouraged by his friends, auditioned for a part in Nouvelle compagnie théâtrale's production of Don Juan revient de guerre. The performance consisted of scenes taken from from the opera, Don Giovanni, by Mozart. Hervieux was cast, despite having no formal musical training. He decided to continue pursuing music and entered into the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Montréal (CMQM). Though he lacked skills in the realm of theory, he discovered his voice as a tenor, which impressed the teachers. He received his diploma at age 27 and pursued further training at the Atelier lyrique, an artist-in-residence programme, at the Opera de Montreal. [1]

Musical career

In 1999, through Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Hervieux participated in a tour of a production of L’Elisir d’amore, an opera buffa by Gaetano Donizetti (1797-1848). The production toured to many cities in Quebec, New Brunswick, and Ontario. [2]

Hervieux has had principal roles in Canada and in Europe. In 2006, he became a principal artist at the Metropolitan Opera de New York. [1]

In 2009, he recorded his first album, Après nous. The album is comprised of seven works of pop music, including songs by Charles Aznavour and Jean-Jacques Goldman, as well as original songs by Frédérick Baron, Jean-François Breau, and Michel Cusson [3]. The album received a Gold certification. [1] Hervieux performed the songs publicly throughout a tour that was organized the following year [4].

Both his albums, Tenor Arias and A Napoli, received a Félix Award in the category of Album of the Year — Classical, in 2010 and 2012 respectively [5], [6].

Range

According to musicologist Michel Veilleux, Hervieux a lyric tenor who can sing "spinto" roles. The range of a lyric tenor is from about C3 - C5. In a review of the album, Tenor Arias, recorded in 2010 with the Metropolitan Orchestra and conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, the music critic Claude Gingras claimed that Marc Hervieux sang with a power and fullness brought him closer to a dramatic tenor [7]. The range of a dramatic tenor is from about A2 - Bb4.

Engagements

In 2013, Marc Hervieux became the spokesperson for a campaign organized by La Tablée populaire to provide meals for schoolchildren in need in Drummondville[1].

Private Life

Marc Hervieux separated from in his partner, Caroline, in 2023. Their relationship lasted more 25 years [8].
