He began performing magic at the age of six and in his late thirties turned his hobby into a successful career, spanning twenty years and counting. He was featured twice on Penn & Tellers television show, Fool Us, and was the first African American magician to become a semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent. He currently performs his magic shows all around the world on luxury cruise lines. As a speaker he presents a keynote speech for at-risk youth at high schools around the US. He is also known for creating over a dozen magic effects that have been purchased and performed by professional magicians around the world.

Career

“Puck” as he is better known to the entertainment world, began an interest in at Adventureland in Long Island, New York, where his father purchased him his first magic trick after watching a performing magician.

Once returning to magic he jumped right in and began looking for mentors to learn the art of magic. He moved to Maryland and began working as an assistant for Denny Haney in his touring show entitled The Denny & Lee Illusion Show [1]. Getting to watch such a polished entertainer work night after night helped him to see what it took to become a successful act. Later he added other mentors who helped him to craft his material. Vito Lupo an award winning magician was one of those mentors as well as Curtis Alexander Carroll a highly successful stage hypnotist who taught Puck the art of mesmerizing.

Puck’s first professional act consisted of him magically producing birds. He used doves [1], parakeets, and a sulphur crested cockatoo named Hoppy. This act earned him a finalist award at the International Brotherhood of Magicians National Convention held in Buffalo, New York as well as a first place award for stage magic at The World Magic Summit in Washington, D.C. His act would evolve to include large scale illusions as well as the addition of manipulation.

In 2012 Puck competed on season seven of America’s Got Talent as participant "The Magic of Puck". He performed on the live shows making it all the way to the semi-finals before being eliminated. His appearance opened many doors as well as the opportunity for other television appearances. He performed twice on Penn & Tellers Fool Us [2] and was also featured on the Huckabee Show.

Puck began a partnership with fellow magician and friend the late Scott Grocki, better known as Scott Alexander. They created a show called Scott & Puck; Magic in Black & White. They took their different backgrounds and ethnicities to perform original magic that showcased their obvious differences while displaying diversity and inclusion. Their magic aside from being highly visual was also racy and cutting edge. Their partnership also produced many magic routines and effects that they marketed to the magic community. Scott passed away unexpectedly on February 5, 2023 at the age of 52.

Puck performs on luxury cruise ships all around the world [3]. He’s also been featured at Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, Monday Night Magic in New York City, The City Hall Theater in Hamilton, Bermuda, The Riviera Casino and The Orleans in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood, California where he’s been a regular for twenty years.

Speaking career

During the Covid lockdown Puck put together a keynote speech geared toward at risk teens. He used his autobiography, Finding Magic Memoirs of a Magician as a template to create this much needed talk to youth. His book tells the story of how he navigated the foster care system, overcame juvenile delinquency and drugs, to become a successful entertainer. He teaches teens how he used the creative process to help focus his attention away from negative behaviors. He also gives advice on overcoming any past issues and instead uses them as motivation to succeed. His program is titled “Unleashing Your Creativity Success is Just a Hobby Away" [3].

Personal life

Puck spent the first years of his life in foster care until eventually being adopted at the age of five. Once adopted, his new family moved from Springfield Gardens in Queens, New York to Roosevelt, New York, a predominantly black neighborhood in Long Island. Roosevelt had many notable residents such as Howard Stern, Julius “Dr. J” Erving, Eddie Murphy, and Public Enemy to name a few.

Puck's father was a significant influence in Puck's developing magicianship via visits to magic shops, magic conventions, and bookings at numerous night clubs and events in the New York area. In 1980 his father unexpectedly died on New Year’s Eve. At 14 years of age, this event caused Puck to abandon his love of magic for almost twenty years. During this time away from magic he began a downward spiral into deviant behavior which prompted his adopted mother, now a widow, to make the tough choice to take out a PINS Petition (Person in need of supervision) from the family court. Once in the children’s judicial system he was sent to several foster detention homes, St Mary’s Group Home in Syosset, New York, and eventually a long term placement at George Jr Republic, a home for troubled youth in Freeville, New York.

Upon leaving George Jr., Republic Puck attended college at SUNY Oswego for just two semesters. From College he joined the United States Army where he spent the majority of his two year enlistment as a tractor trailer operator with the 2nd Armored Division (Forward) in Garlstedt, Germany. When he was discharged and returned to the states he supported himself as a server at high end hotels and restaurants [1].

With no clear direction for his future he was reintroduced to magic through a current girlfriend who asked the question, “What are you going to do with your life?” That question caused him to reflect on his past love of magic and with that they found a magic shop and the choice to become a professional magician began. [1]

In 1993 Puck moved to Alexandria, Virginia to live with his brother and pursue a career in magic. He stayed in the Virginia - Maryland area where he met and married his first wife Kecia who was also his on stage partner. They divorced after one year. In 2004 he moved to Orlando, Florida when his manager, Curtis Alexander Carroll and his wife Ambassador Susan Schwab opened The Magic & Mischief Theatre and installed him as the headliner. While working at the theater Puck remarried in 2005 to another of his onstage assistants. Her name was Laura and they had two daughters. They divorced amicably in 2017.

He remained in the Orlando area where he met his third wife Johana who is a high school principal. With Johana’s assistance they accidentally stumbled upon some information that led to the identity of his Biological family. He learned he had six siblings and that his birth father was a well known pianist and composer named Malcolm “Mal” Waldron whom he was named after. He was the legendary Billie Holiday’s pianist the last years of her life and his most famous songs have become jazz standards [4].

After learning all of this Puck created a signature magic routine that celebrates his adopted father’s unconditional love and support along with his biological father’s strong DNA to honor the two dads. He incorporates his birth father’s most known composition called Soul Eyes. This routine was so emotional it brought Penn Jillette of Penn & Teller to tears. [2]
