Mobile devices that support a second screen which can be used for video conference, video gaming, watching movies, etc. This is often referred to as "alternative mode", or "alt mode", for example USB-C alt modes (DisplayPort Alternative Mode, [1] or HDMI-Alt Mode [2]). Note that DisplayPort is backward compatible with HDMI.
An HDMI to USB-C adapter will discharge the mobile device. A USB multihub adapter with a PD port, and a HDMI port, designed to charge and display simultaneously, can be used to prevent this.
The table lists models that officially states any type of HDMI, DP, etc., support in the specifications.
Interestingly, a large number of smartphones have been demonstrated to work with USB-C HDMI alt mode by default, even if the manufacturer of the phone does not officially state that it has HDMI support (notably the Samsung models from series that are incomplete in the tables in this articles (Galaxy S series, Galaxy Tab S series, Galaxy Note series, Galaxy Z series), LG G, and LG V series, HTC models, and Huawei models). Apple mentions that iPhone in general has HDMI and VGA support, [3] and Google states that Google Pixel phones in general have HDMI support but that they require an DisplayLink certified products, and DisplayLink app installed in order to use it. [4] Samsung smartphones with Samsung DeX can be displayed over DisplayPort: Samsung DeX requires hardware such as USB 3.1 transfer specification, USB-C port with DisplayPort Alternate Mode support to be present on a mobile device. [5]
In general, Huawei phones with Huawei Easy Projection can use the screen as touch pad in desktop mode. Samsung phones that support are connected with Samsung DeX cables, will display desktop mode by default.
Android 10 introduced Desktop mode. Note that mobile devices without a Desktop mode switch in the quick menu, can use it by enable Developer options, and Developer options -> Force desktop mode.
