Iran (officially the Islamic Republic of Iran) competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place during the summer of 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] Since the nation's debut in 1948, Iranian athletes have attended every edition of the Summer Olympic Games, with the exception of the 1980 and 1984 which they boycotted.

One Iranian archer qualified for the men's individual recurve by advancing to the semifinal stage and obtaining one of the three available spots at the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. The quota was filled by 2012 Olympian Milad Vaziri. [2]

Iran qualified four athletes in the sport, sprinter Hassan Taftian who qualified through a quota place achieved at the 2019 Meeting de Paris [3] running 10.03 seconds in the 100 m for a new national record, [4] sprinter Farzaneh Fasihi who qualified through a universality place, being the first female athlete in athletics to qualify for the nation in 57 years after fellow sprinter Simin Safamehr, [5] 2012 Olympic silver medalist discus thrower Ehsan Haddadi qualified [6] by achieving the qualifying standard throwing 66.78 metres at the 2019 Doha Diamond League [7], and hurdler Mahdi Pirjahan who qualified through his world ranking. Days before his competition, Pirjahan withdrew from the men's 400 m hurdles after testing positive for COVID-19 on 27 July 2021. [10]
On the first day of the competition, sprinter Farzaneh Fasihi competed in the women's 100 metres. Fasihi ran 11.76 seconds for her preliminary placing first and qualifying for the heats. She then ran 11.79 for the heat and placed eight, she did not advance. At the same date, discus thrower Ehsan Haddadi competed in the men's discus throw. He threw 58.98 metres in the qualifiers, earning a season's best but did not qualify for the finals.

Iranian women's badminton player, Sorayya Aghaei, got the allocation quotas from the Badminton World Federation after Airi Mikkela withdrew. She is the first ever women's badminton player to represent Iran at the Olympic Games. [11]

Iran entered two male boxers into the Olympic tournament. 19-year-old Danial Shahbakhsh (men's featherweight) and Asia's second-seeded boxer Seyed Shahin Mousavi (men's middleweight) secured the spots on the Iranian squad, by scoring a box-off triumph each in their respective weight divisions at the 2020 Asia & Oceania Qualification Tournament in Amman, Jordan. Iran entered three karateka into the inaugural Olympic tournament. Sajjad Ganjzadeh (men's +75 kg), Sara Bahmanyar (women's 55 kg), and Hamideh Abbasali (women's +61 kg) qualified directly for their respective kumite categories by finishing among the top four karateka at the end of the combined WKF Olympic Rankings. Iran entered three athletes into the taekwondo competition at the Games. Armin Hadipour (men's 58 kg) qualified directly for their respective weight classes by finishing among the top five, while Mirhashem Hosseini received a spare berth freed up by the 2019 World Grand Slam winner in the men's lightweight category (68 kg), as the next highest-placed taekwondo practitioner, not yet qualified, in the WT Olympic Rankings. On the women's side, Nahid Kiani scored a semifinal victory in the lightweight category (57 kg) to book the remaining spot on the Iranian taekwondo squad at the 2021 Asian Qualification Tournament in Amman, Jordan. Iran entered two weightlifters in the weightlifting competitions. 2016 Olympian and two-time world champion Ali Hashemi (men's 109 kg) and the reigning Asian Champion Ali Davoudi (men's +109 kg), each secured one of the top eight slots each in their respective weight divisions based on the IWF Absolute World Rankings. [28] Female weightlifter Parisa Jahanfekrian was vying and eligible to compete in the Games but was suspended and barred from competing by the national weightlifting federation and the national Olympic Committee. [29]
On 3 August 2021, Ali Hashemi competed in the men's 109 kg competition, alongside athletes such as world record holder Simon Martirosyan and eventual Olympic champion Akbar Djuraev. [30] In the snatch He lifted 177 kilograms for his first attempt, 181 kilograms for his second, and 184 kilograms for his last, he placed fifth so far in the competition. For the clean and jerk portion, he failed to lift 226 kilograms for his first and second attempts, then failing at his third and last attempt at 228 kilograms, finishing last with no recorded total. [31]
The following day on 4 August 2021, following his compatriot, Ali Davoudi competed one category up in the men's +109 kg competition. In the snatch, he lifted 191 kilograms for his first attempt, 196 kilograms for his second, and 200 kilograms for his last attempt, he placed second so far in the competition. For the clean and jerk portion, he lifted 234 kilograms for his first attempt, then failing his second attempt at 240 kilograms, he then lifted 241 kilograms successfully for his last. [32] He earned the fourth medal for the nation and placed behind world record holder Lasha Talakhadze who set three new world records in the competition. [33]

Iran qualified eleven wrestlers for each of the following classes into the Olympic competition. Five of them finished among the top six to book Olympic spots in the men's freestyle (57 and 86 kg), men's Greco-Roman (60, 77, and 130 kg) at the 2019 World Championships, while five additional licenses were awarded to the Iranian wrestlers, who progressed to the top two finals of their respective weight categories at the 2021 Asian Qualification Tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan. On February 19, 2020, United World Wrestling awarded an additional Olympic license to Iran in men's freestyle 125 kg, as a response to the doping violations on the Syrian and Uzbek wrestler at the World Championships. [36]

Iran (officially the Islamic Republic of Iran) competed at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Originally scheduled to take place during the summer of 2020, the Games were postponed to 23 July to 8 August 2021, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. [1] Since the nation's debut in 1948, Iranian athletes have attended every edition of the Summer Olympic Games, with the exception of the 1980 and 1984 which they boycotted.

One Iranian archer qualified for the men's individual recurve by advancing to the semifinal stage and obtaining one of the three available spots at the 2019 Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand. The quota was filled by 2012 Olympian Milad Vaziri. [2]

Iran qualified four athletes in the sport, sprinter Hassan Taftian who qualified through a quota place achieved at the 2019 Meeting de Paris [3] running 10.03 seconds in the 100 m for a new national record, [4] sprinter Farzaneh Fasihi who qualified through a universality place, being the first female athlete in athletics to qualify for the nation in 57 years after fellow sprinter Simin Safamehr, [5] 2012 Olympic silver medalist discus thrower Ehsan Haddadi qualified [6] by achieving the qualifying standard throwing 66.78 metres at the 2019 Doha Diamond League [7], and hurdler Mahdi Pirjahan who qualified through his world ranking. Days before his competition, Pirjahan withdrew from the men's 400 m hurdles after testing positive for COVID-19 on 27 July 2021. [10]
On the first day of the competition, sprinter Farzaneh Fasihi competed in the women's 100 metres. Fasihi ran 11.76 seconds for her preliminary placing first and qualifying for the heats. She then ran 11.79 for the heat and placed eight, she did not advance. At the same date, discus thrower Ehsan Haddadi competed in the men's discus throw. He threw 58.98 metres in the qualifiers, earning a season's best but did not qualify for the finals.

Iranian women's badminton player, Sorayya Aghaei, got the allocation quotas from the Badminton World Federation after Airi Mikkela withdrew. She is the first ever women's badminton player to represent Iran at the Olympic Games. [11]

Iran entered three karateka into the inaugural Olympic tournament. Sajjad Ganjzadeh (men's +75 kg), Sara Bahmanyar (women's 55 kg), and Hamideh Abbasali (women's +61 kg) qualified directly for their respective kumite categories by finishing among the top four karateka at the end of the combined WKF Olympic Rankings. Armin Hadipour (men's 58 kg) qualified directly for their respective weight classes by finishing among the top five, while Mirhashem Hosseini received a spare berth freed up by the 2019 World Grand Slam winner in the men's lightweight category (68 kg), as the next highest-placed taekwondo practitioner, not yet qualified, in the WT Olympic Rankings. On the women's side, Nahid Kiani scored a semifinal victory in the lightweight category (57 kg) to book the remaining spot on the Iranian taekwondo squad at the 2021 Asian Qualification Tournament in Amman, Jordan. Iran entered two weightlifters in the weightlifting competitions. 2016 Olympian and two-time world champion Ali Hashemi (men's 109 kg) and the reigning Asian Champion Ali Davoudi (men's +109 kg), each secured one of the top eight slots each in their respective weight divisions based on the IWF Absolute World Rankings. [28] Female weightlifter Parisa Jahanfekrian was vying and eligible to compete in the Games but was suspended and barred from competing by the national weightlifting federation and the national Olympic Committee. [29]
On 3 August 2021, Ali Hashemi competed in the men's 109 kg competition, alongside athletes such as world record holder Simon Martirosyan and eventual Olympic champion Akbar Djuraev. [30] In the snatch He lifted 177 kilograms for his first attempt, 181 kilograms for his second, and 184 kilograms for his last, he placed fifth so far in the competition. For the clean and jerk portion, he failed to lift 226 kilograms for his first and second attempts, then failing at his third and last attempt at 228 kilograms, finishing last with no recorded total. [31]
The following day on 4 August 2021, following his compatriot, Ali Davoudi competed one category up in the men's +109 kg competition. In the snatch, he lifted 191 kilograms for his first attempt, 196 kilograms for his second, and 200 kilograms for his last attempt, he placed second so far in the competition. For the clean and jerk portion, he lifted 234 kilograms for his first attempt, then failing his second attempt at 240 kilograms, he then lifted 241 kilograms successfully for his last. [32] He earned the fourth medal for the nation and placed behind world record holder Lasha Talakhadze who set three new world records in the competition. [33]

Iran qualified eleven wrestlers for each of the following classes into the Olympic competition. Five of them finished among the top six to book Olympic spots in the men's freestyle (57 and 86 kg), men's Greco-Roman (60, 77, and 130 kg) at the 2019 World Championships, while five additional licenses were awarded to the Iranian wrestlers, who progressed to the top two finals of their respective weight categories at the 2021 Asian Qualification Tournament in Almaty, Kazakhstan. On February 19, 2020, United World Wrestling awarded an additional Olympic license to Iran in men's freestyle 125 kg, as a response to the doping violations on the Syrian and Uzbek wrestler at the World Championships. [36]
