Indian is an Indian Tamil-language vigilante action film series written and directed by S. Shankar.It centered Senapathy, an ageing freedom fighter who turned vigilante and fought against social problems like corruption. [1]It consists of a three-part film series. The first film was Indian which released on 9 May 1996 and the second film was Indian 2 , which released on 12 July 2024.A third and final sequel of the film Indian 3 is in post-production.

Synopsis

Indian (1996)

An honest veteran, having served in the Indian Army, decides to teach corrupt officials a lesson. He targets officials, ministers, and bureaucrats to make them work diligently without accepting bribes.

Indian 2 (2024)

Senapathy, an ex-freedom fighter turned vigilante who fights against corruption. Senapathy returns to the country to aid a young man who has been exposing corrupt politicians in the country through videos on the internet.

Indian

The first installment of the series, centers on the fictional incidents. Senapathy, a retired freedom fighter who rebels against corruption in India, which puts him in conflict with his son who lives by corruption.Indian was released on 9 May 1996 (worldwide) and gained positive reviews. [2]It earned ₹50 crore worldwide against a budget of ₹15crore, [3] becoming one of the highest-grossing film in Indian history (1996).

Indian 2

After the success of Indian, Kamal Hassan and Shankar Re-unite once again for sequel. The film was titled as Indian 2: Zero Tolerance and also second installment in this series. [4] The film was released on 12 July 2024 worldwide. [5]

Future films

Indian 3

Although being a single film during production, in June 2023 Udhayanidhi stated that they had discussed plans for a sequel. [6] The following month, it was reported that the film would be split into two-parts, as the final footage for the film was over six hours long; the latter titled Indian 3, was being shot simultaneously. [7] In October 2023, Ananda Vikatan said around 80% of the footage had been shot for Indian 3, and only 25 days were needed to complete it. [8] On 24 March 2024, Haasan confirmed the third installment in the franchise; he stated that Indian 3 was shot alongside Indian 2. [9] In May, Haasan said they were aiming to release Indian 3 in January 2025, six months after the release of the predecessor. [10]
