idChess is a platform for recognizing and broadcasting chess games played on a real board, as well as a mobile application via which the platform operates. Game recognition occurs in real time from a video stream using artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies. idChess algorithms are able to take into account many complex factors that may occur during the game, such as a falling chess piece, players' hands blocking the board, or shadows from chess players' hands [1] VAR in chess, a video assistant referee, is based on the idChess technology.
The idChess mobile application, available for iOS [2] and Android [3] devices, allows you to digitize [4] games played on a real board and record them on a smartphone in the form of a chess diagram in PGN and GIF formats. The application is freemium – viewing recognized games, broadcasting, connecting to tournament broadcasts and the ability to share your games are available only with a paid subscription. Organizers of tournaments with idChess broadcast have access to expanded functionality, namely, creating tournament broadcasts with the necessary parameters: broadcast delay, a password for connecting devices to the tournament, the name, address, date, and time of the tournament, etc.
Broadcasts of games are also available on the platform. [5]
The idChess technology was first introduced to the global chess community at the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai. Currently, idChess is used in India, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Russia, Armenia, USA, Serbia, Azerbaijan, African countries, and other countries. The idChess technology is used at international tournaments in Serbia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and other countries.
At the beginning of July 2023, at the Western Asia Youth Chess Championship among young chess players in categories under 6-18 years old, video assistant referee technology was used [6] for the first time. On July 3, 2023, the International Chess Federation officially presented the system by publishing news [7] dedicated to the technology on its website.
VAR is used by arbiters for viewing and analyzing controversial issues. At any time during the game, a player can call the arbiter and report a violation. If the arbiter has missed an episode of a hypothetical violation, he can pause the game recognition and review the controversial moment using VAR: pause the video broadcast and rewind.
