Fire Talk is an American independent record label based in Brooklyn. [1]
Fire Talk began in the spring of 2009 in Denver, Colorado, when Trevor Peterson, former member of the indie rock band Woodsman, wanted a vessel to release his own music. [2] Woodsman booked their first tour in spring 2009 and created CD-Rs to sell at merchandise tables. Peterson created the Fire Talk logo in an effort to "make the band's merch look a little more legit". [3] The band added the new logo to their merchandise, which included hand painted CD covers. [3] Shortly thereafter, friends of Peterson started asking if they could use the logo for their own releases. By the time a third friend asked, Peterson decided to make Fire Talk into a "real thing". [2]
In June 2010, Fire Talk released Tennis' debut 7-inch, "South Carolina". [3] [4] On September 28, 2010, Fire Talk released their first vinyl LP for Colorado psychedelic rock group Tjutjuna. [5] [6]
In 2011, Peterson relocated the label to Brooklyn, New York. [7]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fire Talk announced they would waive their own share of revenue along with Bandcamp on the platform's commission-free days in a bid to help artists on their roster raise much-needed funds. [8] [9]
In July 2021, Fire Talk launched a new digital singles label called Open Tab. [10] The label focuses on new music discovery and aims on bringing community and human curation back into world that is becoming increasingly reliant on algorithms. [10] [11]
On September 22, 2023, the label opened Fire Talk Shop, a brick and mortar store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. [12]
In September 2023, Fire Talk announced the launch of their new Chicago-based imprint, Angel Tapes, along with its inaugural release, Common Rituals, the debut EP by the Chicago quartet Cruel. [13] Angel Tapes offers a platform for developing artists to release music in "good faith".
