Dreamlink
Dreamlink is a short film telling the story of a 15 year old teenage girl Jesse, played by Chloe Engels and her mother Bethany, played by Ebony Nave. Filmed in the Blue Mountains with the funding of various brands and Blue Mountains Member of Parliament Trish Doyle, the non-for-profit organisation Mountain Of Youth came to Springwood High School (Faulconbridge, NSW, Australia) within the aim of choosing 12 students from Years 7-10 to form and gather issues that young people face and influence those ideas into a narrative. Mountain of Youth, directed by Kalani Gacon, a local Katoomba filmmaker, explicitly aims to promote the well-being of young people by letting them communicate their story through workshops. The MOY students were assigned to raise $500 each by using different fundraising strategies as well as attend twice weekly meetings to form stories that they would all share and would be formed into one. The Springwood students were to be taught about the process of writing a script, organising their timetables to maximise on-set productivity, having different roles on set, and post-production. Dreamlink was premiered and red-carpeted at the Katoomba Edge Cinema, and a second screening took place at the Springwood Hub Theatre. Dreamlink is now currently to subject to short film festivals around the world.
Narrative
The story of Dreamlink depicts the relationship of a daughter and mother set within the 2030s timeframe. By then, an app named Dreamlink is shaping the world of the society of the Blue Mountains. The app allows for its users to connect a purple trademark Dreamlink plastic headband to their forehead. The technology works to submerge its users into a dream world whilst sleeping but allowing one to choose their identity, or how they look. The motive of Dreamlink is to connect, to link, as to say the person you need the most in your life. Jesse, the young teenage girl, has a broken connection with her Tik Tok star mother Bethany. In Dreamlink, the first scene enters showing two female identities, or avatars, looking out at the sunset whilst on a picnic rug on a rock that overlooks mountains of trees, filmed in Lincoln's Rock.
As Dreamlink is in the perspective of Jesse, we know that one of the female avatars is Jesse dreaming in a surreal setting with another female, which happens to be the person she so has been matched with, or in other words, needs the most in her life. Dreamlink reveals who that second person Jesse is so mysteriously matched with every single time she enters the world of dreams, contrasting a perfect Dreamlink world with Jesse's melancholy in the real world and Bethany's urge to be Tik Tok Famous, never having time to care for her daughter. Jesse is annoyed at her lack of carelessness, when, in one scene, Bethany forgets to pick Jesse from her soccer training. Jesse walks back home in the rain soaking wet, and tells her Mum that she waited for 30 minutes in the rain whilst Bethany was in the warmth, making a live video on Tik Tok.
Jesse's avatar can be found in a scene in a nightclub dancing with her avatar to a song. They find each other and start dancing to the beat of the song, performed by The Phosphenes named Runaway Star. Bethany is unequivocally disappointed as can be seen in the Restaurant scene at Papadino's, as no one attends her birthday. Jesse tries to apologise, but is left to linger after Bethany's promiscuous boyfriend calls her to make plans for later that night. Then, the next scene happens when both Jesse's avatar in Dreamlink is again matched with the same anonymous avatar in a cablecar environment. Jesse's female match, again, doesn't know who Jesse is, but Jesse soon goes to find out who her match is as the character says: "It was my birthday today". This then leads to Jesse concluding that her Dreamlink match, the person who she needs the most, is her Mum. A day later, Jesse then reveals to her Mum by playing the exact same song they happened to dance to, Runaway Star, at the dance scene. Bethany is left shook as she pauses her editing on a reels video; and they are left unknowingly into an embrace as Dreamlink cuts its ending.
