dEMOTIONAL is a Swedish metal band that was formed in June 2009 by guitarist, Sebastian Fjordevik. The band's current lineup includes Christopher Kristensen (vocals), Nils-Petter Nilsson (vocals), Sebastian Fjordevik (guitar), Johan Olofsson (guitar), and Kristoffer Lindh (bass).
The band originated from Sebastian Fjordevik's university studies in music production in the winter of 2009. For his capstone project, Fjordevik collaborated with his then roommate Nils-Petter Nilsson and Christopher Kristensen, who contributed vocals and screams to Fjordevik's EP. Notably, the recorded songs featured Tommy Magnusson on drums, who would later become a permanent member of the band.
In the fall, with only three members, the band recorded a music video for the song "When She Cries," showcasing their early visual style crafted by Kristofer Kiggs Carlsson behind the camera. The addition of guitarist Johan Olofsson and drummer Mattias Öbom in the following spring marked a pivotal moment, leading to the band's first live performances. Bassist Kristoffer Lind joined in 2011, coinciding with the replacement of drummer Mattias Öbom by Tommy Magnusson. dEMOTIONAL garnered attention on radio stations [1], in music magazines [2], and through their dynamic live performances, even before the release of their debut record.
This recognition sparked the beginning of numerous sponsorship collaborations, including partnerships with Frank Q, Iceman, and Casual Friday, along with the production of additional music videos. It was during this period that Dead End Exit Records (a division of Roasting House Records) offered the band a record deal, leading to the commencement of recording for their debut album. [3]
In May 2013, the debut album State: In Denial was released [4], featuring mixing and mastering by Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd in Studio Fredman. The album debuted on Sverigetopplistan's top album charts, where it soared to No. 5 on the official Hard Rock charts. [5] [6] The remainder of the year saw the band actively engaged in songwriting and performances alongside acts such as Arch Enemy, Entombed (band), Adept and The Unguided, including a tour in Spain. [7]
The subsequent year, the group primarily focused on composing and recording their follow-up album, Tarassis, in collaboration with Pontus Hjelm ( Dead By April), who took charge of recording, mixing, and mastering. This collaboration also led to a joint European tour, which faced challenges in Russia during the fall of 2015. [8] In 2016, the band decided to part ways with their record company, opting to navigate their journey independently. Shortly thereafter, they commenced work on their third full-length album, once again with assistance from Pontus Hjelm, who also took on the role of producer.
In May 2017, dEMOTIONAL unveiled their highly anticipated album, Discovery, accompanied by a series of impactful release events and a compelling 14-date tour across Spain and Portugal. [9] This musical endeavor proved to be a defining moment for the band, capturing the attention of both fans and critics alike. Critics, including notable figures such as Jesper Stromblad ( The Halo Effect, Dimension Zero, Cyhra, ex- In Flames), showered Discovery with praise for its innovative sound, skillful musicianship, and thematic depth. [10] The album's distinctive fusion of melodic elements and intense metal resonated strongly within the metal community, establishing dEMOTIONAL, once again, as a noteworthy presence in the genre.

dEMOTIONAL has carved a distinctive niche within the metal genre, seamlessly blending melodic elements with the intensity of metalcore. Their musical style, often described as a fusion of captivating melodies and powerful metalcore dynamics, sets them apart in the metal scene. The band's compositions feature intricate guitar work, harmonious arrangements, and dynamic shifts that capture the essence of melodic metal, while the raw energy and aggressive undertones characteristic of metalcore infuse their sound with intensity.
What defines dEMOTIONAL's melodic metalcore style is not only the seamless integration of these musical elements, but also the emotional depth embedded in their compositions. The interplay between soaring melodies and aggressive riffs creates a sonic landscape that resonates with both the visceral energy of metalcore enthusiasts and the emotive sensibilities of melodic metal fans alike.
