This 2021 documentary explores the life and career of Shakespearean actor Jonathan Frid, who became a TV icon in the role of vampire Barnabas Collins on the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]
Dark Shadows and Beyond – The Jonathan Frid Story was produced and directed by Frid’s former business partner and Emmy Award-winning producer Mary O’Leary for MPI Media Group. [6] [7] Interviews for the documentary were filmed in 2019 in Los Angeles, CA; Santa Barbara CA; New York City, NY; Memphis, Tennessee; Clarksburg, Ontario and Hamilton, Ontario. Interviewees included Dick Cavett, fellow Dark Shadows castmates David Selby, James Storm, Lara Parker, Kathryn Leigh Scott and Marie Wallace, fellow actors from both before and after Dark Shadows such as Anthony Zerbe, Seizure co-star Christina Pickles, Arsenic and Old Lace Broadway co-star Marion Ross, Frid’s personal assistants and professional associates over the years, friends and family. [8] [9] Actor Ian Buchanan reads a selection of Frid’s personal letters. Archival footage of interviews and rare performance clips are also featured. [10] [11] [12]
Dark Shadows and Beyond – The Jonathan Frid Story was nominated in 2022 for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Special for the 49th Daytime Creative Arts & Lifestyle Emmy Awards. The film received a 2022 silver Telly Award for Excellence as Online Documentary, [13] and third place for Best Feature Film, and Audience Award Winner at the 2022 TMFF film festival in Glasgow, Scotland. [14] In addition, the film has received many film festival awards and honors. [15] [16] [17] [18] In October of 2023, two years after its release, Dark Shadows and Beyond - The Jonathan Frid Story was screened at the 15th Annual Tri-Cities International Film Festival in Richland, Washington.
