Csaba Gombár is a Hungarian political scientist, sociologist, university professor and essayist. He was born in 1939 in Budapest to Kálmán Gombár and Mária Dóra. He married mathematician Éva Komáromi in 1968. Their daughter Eszter Gombár was born in 1968.
He was a student at Ferenc Rákóczi Military Secondary School from 1953-57. He was a student of the ELTE Faculty of Arts from 1958-64, majoring in philosophy and history. In 1966, he obtained a doctorate in Humanities. During 1969-70, he was a post-graduate sociology student at a course organised by Tibor Huszár and Zsuzsa Ferget at the MSZMP Institute of Social Sciences. During 1971-72, he studied in the Political Sciences department at the University of California, Berkeley on an IREX scholarship.
During 1966-68, he was a lecturer at the BME philosophy department. During 1969-1988, he worked at the MSZMP Institute of Social Sciences, undertaking a number of sociological and political sciences research projects and studies along with, among others, Zsolt Papp, Tamás Kolosi, János Széll and Ferenc Görgényi. He focused on the analysis of democracy, and the history and development of the idea of democracy. A key figure in the reform intelligentsia of the 70s and 80, he was a frequent, countrywide speaker. Additionally, he was an external lecturer at the Department of Sociology at ELTE from 1975, and a lecturer at the Department of Political Science at the Faculty of State and Law at ELTE from 1986.
During 1981-85, he was a member of the Tárulás film studio council. During 1996-99, he was the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Feature Film division of the Hungarian Moving Pictures Foundation. During this period, he spent time in Moscow in 1979-80 and in Toledo, Ohio in 1987-88 on other research projects and wrote these books - Politika, címszavakban and Vigyázó szemetek merre is vessétek?
He was the President of the Hungarian Radio from 1990 to 1993. Then, he was a researcher in Vienna at the international research institute, Institut fur die Wissenschaften vom Menschen, from 1994 to 1995. Between 1988 to 2001, he was a trustee then Vice Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Soros Foundation. In 2005, he was the Presidential candidate for the SZDSZ party [1].
In 1989-90, he worked at Pénzügykutató Zrt. From 1993, he has been the director of the Korridor Political Research Centre [2]. Founded by him, Laszlo Lengyel and Elemér Hankiss, Korridor has published 15 books. He was also a regular contributor to the cultural section of Népszabadság and 168 óra, and editorial lead for Politikatudományi Szemle between 1990-97.
