Chinchilla (stylised as CHINCHILLA) is an multi-genre British singer, songwriter and music producer. She is originally from London, and describes her music as "feisty pop" and a "kind of fiery soulful empowering pop". ^{[1] [2] [3]}

Chinchilla is known for her distinctive pioneering image, love of fashion, passion for hats and hands on approach to her image; designing or styling many of her outfits and often making her own headwear. Chinchilla also loves to work alongside artistic fashion designers, stylists and milliners to realise a particular project's image. ^{[4] [5] [6]}

Chinchilla's sense of the visual extends to the other aspects of her creativity whether in concept creation, writing and producing her artistic genre defying music or devising, directing and performing in the striking, often character driven, music videos. Throughout which Chinchilla maintains a hands on approach to creative control and content creation. ^{[6] [5]}

Career

Career beginnings

Chinchilla's was born and raised in London, both her parents worked as actors. With this creative background Chinchilla was drawn to performing, making music and joining bands; leading to seeking a career as a singer, songrwriter and producer. ^[6] Chinchilla graduated in 2018 with a degree in Music Industry Practice (Creative Artist) from the Academy of Contemporary Music, at Metropolis Studios, London, ^[10] joining the academy's alumni including Matty Healy of the band The 1975 and singer-songwrtter Ed Sheeran.

Shortly after graduating Chinchilla supported Sting on the European leg of his 2019 My Songs Tour. ^{[11] [12]} Further expanding her presence in Europe working with Estonian muscian/producer NOËP, ^[11] releasing two songs together with their song "fk this up" becoming a Gold disc earning top 5 hit in Italy. ^[13] NOËP and Chinchilla were nominated for two Estonian Music Awards (EMA), ^{[14] [15]} performing together at the EMA gala shows in 2019 & 2020. ^[11]

Chinchilla supported American electronic alternative duo Missio on their 2020 European tour. ^{[6] [11]} and English pop/rock band McFly on their Young Dumb Thrills UK tour in 2021. ^{[11] [16]} Chinchilla released two collaborations, in 2019 and 2021, with Welsh artist Ren. ^[3]

Chinchilla indepedently released her debut single "Elements" in 2019, and her debut EP Awakening in 2020, receiving positive coverage. ^{[1] [4] [17]} Chinchilla's described her music, at the time, as "kind of fiery soulful empowering pop", ^{[1] [2]} also being described as a pop polymath due to the variety of genres Chinchilla's music encompases. ^{[4] [18]}

In 2020 Chinchilla signed with Columbia Records (Germany), ^[19] with whom she released her Moon Maintenance for Dummies EP, "Fingers" and "Lockdown Getdown" singles.

Throughout 2019 to 2022 Chinchilla performed at many leading European festivals.

2022–2023: Viral Breakthrough and The Voice appearance

Chinchilla choose to become independent again in 2022 to focus on a more alternative artistic sound, leaving Columbia Records on mutual terms, also leaving her then management team. ^[3] Chinchilla focused on her songwriting in 2022, performing at fewer festivals that year.

Chinchilla's breakout single "Little Girl Gone" - the first planned release of her Flytrap project - was released in April 2023, becoming Chinchilla's first charting single, peaking at position 17 in the UK official singles download chart. ^[7] The song quickly became a viral hit after becoming a female range anthem, ^[9] gaining millions of views on YouTube and became a viral TikTok song ^[20] with almost a million videos created using the track. ^[21]

Following the success of "Little Girl Gone", Chinchilla was invited to become one of the handful of inaugural artists to spearhead TikTok's newly created Elevate music discovery initiative designed to support rising stars. ^[22] The song was placed at position 5 in TikTok's top UK songs of the summer 2023. ^[23]

With that song Chinchilla broke a Billboard Chart record, becoming the first female soloist to debut at number one on the Billboard charts Emerging Artists chart in its six year history. ^[8] In June 2024, the song passed the 100 million stream mark on Spotify. [1]

In mid-2023 Chinchilla joined specialist breakthrough artist management company Special Projects Music, whose founders helped to launch the careers of several leading artists, including Yungblud in the UK and Billie Eilish in the USA. ^{[24] [25]}

On the heels of the success of "Little Girl Gone", Chinchilla was courted by a number major labels, deciding to signed with UMG's Island Records releasing via her own imprint Chinchilla Music with artistic control. ^{[6] [3] [26]} Chinchilla released "Cut You Off", the second release from her Flytrap project, in October 2023 via her imprint. ^{[6] [3]} The song's official video, which Chinchilla co-directed, received a screening at the Berlin Music Video Awards in June 2024. ^[27]

Chinchilla took part as a contestant on The Voice UK (series 12), filmed in late 2022. Auditioning in episode 2, airing on the 11th November 2023, achieving a three chair turn with her re-take on the song "I Put a Spell on You", [2] choosing Anne-Marie as her coach. Chinchilla was eliminated during the subsequent Callback rounds, where her group song was "Virtual Insanity".

Chinchilla returned to the festival circuit in 2023 performing across Europe.

2024 - present: Flytrap and continued success

Chinchilla released "MF Diamond", a fast beat dance track, in March 2024, which was co-written with Grammy Award nominated songwriter Justin Tranter and Finnish-American producer-songwriter Jussifer. ^{[26] [28]} This was followed by the release of the heartfelt ballad "1:5" in May 2024. ^[29] Both songs also form part of Chinchilla's "Flytrap" EP.

Chinchilla released her diverse genre Flytrap concept EP in June 2024. The concept EP's theme is one of overcoming control and possession, whether in relationships or professionally. Inspired by an analogy from Chinchilla's mother ‘When you hold something tightly, you kill it, and that’s what flytraps do', which also features on the outro of the EP. ^{[5] [30]}

In June 2024 it was announced ^[31] that Chinchilla would be providing a cover of "The Chain", by Fleetwood Mac, for Amazon Prime Video's historical reimagining original series "My Lady Jane", ^[32] based on the novels written by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand and Jodi Meadows. The song was also featured by Amazon Prime in the promotional videos for the series, with Chinchilla invited to attend the London and Los Angeles red carpet premiers.

Estonian Music Awards

The Estonian Music Awards (Estonian: Eesti Muusikaauhinnad) is the annual Estonian pop music awards, that have been held since 1998. Chinchilla has two received nominations in 2020 ^[33] for her collabation song "fk this up" with Estonian artist NOËP, on which Chinchilla provided featuring vocals and is credited as a lyricist. ^[34]

Berlin Music Video Awards

The Berlin Music Video Awards is an annual international festival held in Berlin, Germany, to celebrate the art of music videos. The official music video for Chinchilla's song Cut You Off received a 2024 Silver screening, ^[27] which rewards creative pieces of art deserving of recognition and acknowledges the hard work and creativity put into them. Dora Paphides, Harv Frost & Chinchilla were the directors of the music video, additionally Chinchilla was the concept creator and lead performing artist.
