Burkhard Garweg is a suspected former German terrorist associated with the third generation Red Army Faction (RAF). He went underground in 1990 and has been sought by police since then.
He used multiple aliasses including Martin Becker, Martin Martens and Martin von Staden. He is linked to suspected terrorist Daniela Klette. [1]
Burkhard Garweg was born in Bonn. He moved with his parents to Hamburg when he was six, where he spent his youth. He has a brother and a sister. In 1987 he dropped out of school and began to associate with left-wing scene centred around Hamburg's Hafenstrasse, where he is said to have met fellow RAF members Daniela Klette and Ernst-Volker Staub. [2] At the turn of 1989/90 he went underground and probably joined the third generation of the RAF. [3]
The RAF’s third generation was responsible for the dead of Alfred Herrhausen, chair of Deutsche Bank, in 1989 and for a sophisticated plan to shoot down 1991 Detlev Karsten Rohwedder, the head of Treuhandanstalt, the government agency that oversaw the reprivatisation of East German businesses after colapse of this state. [4] It is mainly unclear, which persons were involved in the Third Generations RAF actions.
With Daniela Klette, Ernst-Volker Staub, and others, he is said to have been involved in the Weiterstadt prison bombing in 1993 [5] by the RAF " Katharina Hammerschmidt Command".
The attacks from 1999 to 2016, in which Garweg, Straub and Klette are said to have robbed supermarkets and cash-in-transit vehicles, are not viewed as politically motivated. [6]
A few days after the arrest of Daniela Klette on 26 February 2024 in Berlin, the police published new photographs of Garweg which had been found in Klette's apartment. In the ongoing process of her arrest, Klette warned Garweg via SMS from her mobile phone and than flushed the sim card down the toilet. Garweg than switched off his mobile phone. [7] The police searched a former industrial site on Markgrafendamm in the Friedrichshain district, where Garweg supposedly lived in a trailer under the name “Martin”. Police also raided apartments on Grünberger Straße and Corinthstraße in Friedrichshain, but did not locate Garweg. [8]
Klette, Garweg and Staub have been on Europol’s most wanted persons list since they went underground or were arrested (Klette). [4]
