Babatunde Apalowo is a Nigerian filmmaker. He is known for his debut feature film, All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White (2023) [3] [4] [5]. The film, which premiered at the 73rd Berlin International Film Festival, was nominated for the Panorama Audience Award [6] [7], GWFF Award for Best First Feature Film [8] and it won the Teddy Award for Best Feature Film [9] [10] with queer themes. Apalowo's work explores themes of identity, belonging, and queer experiences within Nigerian society [11] [12]
He was born and raised in Ogbagi Akoko, Nigeria [13] [14]. He studied Civil Engineering at the University of Benin [11]. He won the Homevida short script competition sponsored by the United Nations with his script titled 'Lost Children' in 2014. [15] [16] [17] [18]
Apalowo's breakthrough came with " All the Colours of the World Are Between Black and White" (2023) [4] [14] [19]. The film depicts a love story between two men Bambino played by Tope Tedela and Bawa (Riyo David) navigating their feelings in a society that condemns homosexuality [20] [21]. He serves as both writer and director on the project [13]. Apalowo is a frequent collaborator of Walt Taylaur having written the screenplays for Catch.er (2018) and Jolly Roger (2022) [22] which he earned a nomination for Achievement in Screenplay [23] [22]at the 2022 AMAA awards.
