The Ansaris of Yusufpur is a family of Ansari sheikhs that are descended from, Khwaja Shaikh Hamiduddin Sadullah who was a Sufi scholar from Herat. They are from one common ancestor who is Abdullah Ansari through his son Khwaja Abdurrahman. [2] [3]
The Ansaris of Yusufpur are descended from the Sufi saint of Herat Abdullah Ansari through his son Khwaja Abdurrahman. [4] 24 generations after Khwaja Abdurahman his descendants, Khwaja Najmuddin Siraj, Khwaja Mobin and Khwaja Mohammad Hayat joined the Mughal emperor Babur in his conquest for India. The family migrated to India along with the Mughals in the year 1526 after the Battle of Panipat. [5] In 1540 eldest brother, Khwaja Najmuddin Siraj was made Qazi of the district of Yusufpur by the emperor Humayun. After the death of Khwaja Namjuddin Siraj, his son Qazi Yusuf was made Qazi by Akbar in the year 1568. Qazi Yusuf is seen as the common ancestor of all the Ansaris of Yusufpur. He had 6 sons with the oldest being Qazi Ahmed. The line of Qazis continued till 1857. [6] [7]
The Ansari family has contributed a lot to the landscape of Indian politics. Mukhtar Ahmed Ansari was an Indian nationalist and political leader and former president of the Indian National Congress and the Muslim League during the Indian Independence Movement. He was one of the founders of Jamia Millia Islamia University. [8] He remained its chancellor from 1928 to 1936. [9] [10] The former Vice president of India Mohammad Hamid Ansari himself hails from this family. [11] The Ansari brothers, Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal Ansari and Sibgatullah Ansari have all been elected as MLA's of their respected constituencies, within the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly. Sibgatulla having served as the MLA of Mohammadabad from 2007 to 2017 [12], Afzal Ansari an Indian politician of the Samajwadi Party and currently an incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) of India for Ghazipur constituency, Uttar Pradesh. He won the 2004 and 2019 Indian general elections. [13] Mukhtar Ansari, was an Indian gangster and a politician, based in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the Mau constituency five times, including twice as a Bahujan Samaj Party candidate. [14] [15]
