Ana Mesquita, (born 1967 in Mozambique) also known by her artist name MESQ, is a Portuguese visual artist. She studied design, having graduated from the CITEX Design course in Oporto in 1991, and she furthered her education with a post-graduation in Journalism from the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa. Mesquita's artistic work is characterized by stark color palettes, wide strokes, and patterns to convey messages, a mixed visual form of textual expression [1] [2] [3]
For twenty years, Mesquita pursued a career in journalism, [4] both on TV [5] and press, before returning to her artistic roots in 2012. [6] [7] Since then, she has launched a series of individual exhibitions [8] both in Portugal and internationally. Her work spans across various mediums, including digital drawing [9], video art, mural painting, and collage composition. [10] She is part of the movement of women visual artists that has been shaping the newer cultural environment of 21st century Portugal.
In 2021, she co-created, with the musician / composer João Gil [11] a show named "Caixa de Luz, (LightBox) " [12] that went on production in Capitólio and in Casa da Música. Ana Mesquita's video installation works are characterized by a figurative style, using color and form to communicate narratives and emotions.
Her body of work belies the ability to shift between different art forms and mediums. She has embarked in several artistic collaboration works that have been exhibited in Maat museum [13] and in the biennal [14] de Cerveira.
