Alexey Popov (born May 6, 1982) - is a Ukrainian legacy aerospace engineer and aircraft designer, and pilot. Founder and current CEO of Sirius Aviation AG. [1] [2], a major company in the aerospace industry [3] that designs first hydrogen business jet in collaboration with BMW Group Designworks [4] and Sauber Group F1. [5]
Alexey Popov was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine. He began his educational journey at the Kharkiv Aviation Institute (KhAI) [6] from 1999 to 2005, where he earned a degree in Aircraft Engines and Power Plants, specializing in diagnostics and design. At the age of 26, he moved from Ukraine to Switzerland and then obtained a Master's degree in Aerospace Management from TBS Toulouse, France (2009 - 2010), followed by a certification as an Aerospace Quality Management System Auditor from Bureau Veritas in Paris in 2011. Additionally, he underwent professional training at the McGill Aerospace Professional Training Centre in Montreal, Canada in 2014.
In 2008, at the age of 26, he moved from Ukraine to Switzerland.
Popov's career began in 2009 at the State Enterprise "Kharkiv Machine-Building Plant 'FED'" [7], where he quickly rose from the position of Foreman to Vice President of Commerce and Sales. In 2020, he took charge of SE "Plant 410 CA" [8] [9], which is part of the "Ukroboronprom" concern. He also provided consultancy at SE "ANTONOV" and JSC "MOTOR SICH", and held a leadership position at the "Science Park 'FED' JSC", which highlight his significant contribution to the aerospace industry. At ANTONOV, he was involved in the design, development and certification of various aircraft, confirming the company's position as an innovator in the aerospace industry.
In 2021, he founded Sirius Aviation AG [10]. The company specializes in the construction of the Sirius Jet [11], a jet with vertical takeoff and landing capabilities. It is also the developer of an innovative hydrogen powertraine for the Sirius Jet [12]
Under his leadership, several aircraft with a wide range of applications were designed and developed:
Popov is an experienced aviator with PPL ratings ME, IR and Low VFR. In 2019, he flew transatlantic in his single-engine Cirrus SR22 GTS. [18] He was in the air for 46 hours and covered more than 12 thousand kilometers, flying over America, Canada, Greenland, the Atlantic Ocean, Iceland and Europe. [19] The flight was made at an altitude of more than 7 kilometers. [20] [21]
As CEO Sirius Aviation AG [1],Popov oversees the company's foreign economic activities interacting with more than 30 partner countries. [22] He leads marketing initiatives and promotes scientific innovation to improve company performance. [23] [24] [25]
