Afua Asantewaa O. Aduonum (11 May 1993) is a Ghanaian media personality and journalist who has been granted permission by Guinness World Records to undertake a singing marathon, aiming to break the existing record which is held by Sunil Waghmare in Nagpur, India from March 3 to 7, 2012. [1] The record attempt started on 24 December 2023. [2] [3] [4]
Afua started her career as a journalist, working with multiple media stations in Ghana. Afua also ventured into music, releasing her debut album with the title singa-thon. She is the founder and director as Miss Tourism Ghana, which she was a finalist twice. [5] She also manages Miss Kidi Ghana, Miss Kidi Africa, Miss Teen Africa and Pose for Africa. [5]
The singathon, which started on December 24, 2023 is expected to last between 117 and 120 hours ending on December 27, 2023. Afua is singing solely Ghanaian songs from the Highlife, Hiplife, and Gospel genres. While she is not a professional singer, she is determined to break the current record which is held by Sunil Waghmare from India. Sunil sang for 105 hours from March 3 to March 7, 2012. [1] Some skeptics doubt her ability to surpass the existing record, others also believe that she has a good chance of succeeding, especially with widespread support from the Ghanaian community [2] [6]
Afua enjoyed massive support from the Ghanaian populace during her attempt to break the existing record with huge numbers trooping to the Venue to show their solidarity through singing and dancing. A number of celebrities including the Vice president of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia passed through Akwaaba Village, the venue for the event. [7] [8] [9]
Following Afua's media tour to announce her intentions for the challenge, Rex Omar called on the event organizers to provide a list of all the songs to be performed during the Sing-a-thon in adherence to copyright regulations. This did not sit well with Afua and some sympathizers, with a lot of them running commentaries on social media. Afua's team however later complied. [10] [11]
Afua is married with 3 children. [3]
