Acharya Shri Sunilsagarji Maharaj (7 October 1977) is an Indian Digambara Jain Acharya (Digambar Jain Monk). He is recognized both for his scholarship and tapasya (austerity). He is known for his works in ancient indian language "Prakrut".

Life

Early life

Sunilsagar Ji was born on 7th October 1977 in Tigoda, in the Sagar district, of Madhyapradesh in a Jain family. [1]

His childhood name was Sandeep.

Initiation

Sunilsagar was initiated as a Digambara monk in 1997 at the age of 20 by Acharya SanmatiSagarji Maharaj, who belonged to the lineage of Acharya Adisagarji Maharaj, at Jhansi.His father Bhagchandji took diksha from him.

Ascetic life

Acharya Sunilsagar Ji Maharaj has made very strict rules for his ascetic life. He eats once in a day and also drinks water only once a day by filling it with his finger. He used to eat very limited quantity of food. He travells across the country on foot.

Acharya

Sunilsagar was elevated to the Acharya status in 2007. Sunilsagarji sleeps on the floor or a wooden platform without any mattress or pillow. As a Digambar monk, for discourses he was provided a raised wooden seat withough any padding.

Works

Acharya SunilsagaraJi is a scholar of Sanskrit and Prakrit and knows several regional languages including Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and English. He wrote in languages such as Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Hindi. His works include Vishva ka Surya, Ishtopdesh (Vyakhya), Bhaav Nirjhar (Marathi Pravchan), Aatmoday Shataka and Adhyatmsar Shataka. His prakrut work includes Bhavaloyana, Nidi Sangaho and many more. He composed nearly 50 books which include great works in Hindi, Prakrut.

His tradition

Acharya SunilsagarJi belongs to the tradition established by Acharya Adisagarji (ankalikar). Acharya Adisagarji initiated Acharya Mahavirkirtiji, who was then succeeded by Acharya Vimalsagarji, Acharya Sanmatisagarji.

His wanderings (Vihara)

As a traditional Digambara Jain monk, Acharya Sunilsagarji never stayed in a single location for more than a few days, except for the four months of the rainy season (Chaturmas).
