The AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target Pointer Illuminator Aiming Laser (ATPIAL) is a laser sight produced by L3Harris, which aquired Insight Technology in 2010, an American defense contractor. It is developed for use on rifles that are fitted with a Picatinny rail system. [1] A high powered version of the AN/PEQ-15 exists under the LA-5/PEQ designation, which is in use with U.S Special Operations Forces in the SOPMOD Block II kit.
The AN/PEQ-15 entered service in 2003, and is the successor to the AN/PEQ-2 developed by Insight Technology. [2] The AN/PEQ-15 has seen widespread use by U.S. and other Western forces during the war in Afghanistan.
The ATPIAL has three laser modes; Visible Aiming Laser, IR Aiming Laser and an IR Illuminator. The AN/PEQ-15 is available in a low power Class1/3R power rating which means it is available for commercial sales, unlike the more powerful LA-5/PEQ, and the standard issue ATPIAL, which is only available for Law Enforcement and Government purchase. [3] The AN/PEQ-15 has an effective IR laser range of 600m on low power, and 2000m on high power, while the visible laser has a 25m range. [4]
