Cornett is an unincorporated community in Cass County, Texas, United States. [1] According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 30 in 2000.

History

The area in what is known as Cornett today was settled sometime before the American Civil War. It was originally named Hamil's Chapel but then changed its name to Troup because most of its settlers relocated to the area from Troup County, Georgia. It was soon changed to Cornett for the family of local landowner G.T. Cornett. A post office was established at Cornett in 1901 and remained in operation until 1906. Cornett had two businesses serving 53 people in 1933. It went down to 40 in 1964 and had no businesses. It further declined to 30 in 1986 and had a church and community center. The population remained at 30 in 1990 and 2000. [2]

Geography

Cornett is located at the intersection of Farm to Market Roads 2888, 250 and 2745, 12 mi (19 km) north of Hughes Springs and 8 mi (13 km) southeast of Naples in northwestern Cass County. [3]

Education

Today, the community is served by the Hughes Springs Independent School District.
