Carol Dysinger is the Oscar-winning director of Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You're a Girl). Dysinger won the Best Documentary Short Subject at the 92nd Academy Awards in 2020. [1] [2]
Biography
Dysinger began filming on location in wartorn Afghanistan in 2005 in what would become her Afghan trilogy. In 2010, she completed her first documentary based entirely in Afghanistan. She documented the struggles of international and various American National Guard units attempting to train an Afghan National Army in her feature film, Camp Victory, Afghanistan. "The film crackles with the emotional energy and intelligence of its subjects," wrote Pulitzer-Prize-winning columnist Jim Dwyer in the New York Times when the documentary premiered at Lincoln Center in June of 2010. Dynsinger's short film on Afghan girls skateboarding in Kabul followed, to much acclaim, which included a 2020 BAFTA for best short. Dysinger has just completed a third documentary on Afghanistan, One Bullet, the story of an Afghan mother grieving her murdered son, which premiered to great acclaim at DocEdge and since then, has won best international documentary at the Galway Fleahd.
Carol Dysinger, a recipient of the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for her work on war and story, currently serves as an associate professor at the legendary New York film graduate program at New York University. [4]
