Bridgeport Academy is an alternative school in Hampton, Virginia. Established in 2007, the school serves middle and high school students as an alternative education [3] from regular Hampton City Public Schools.
The school opened in August 2007 [4] and was originally housed in a strip mall on North Armistead St. in downtown Hampton, using space that was under lease from Queen Street Baptist Church. In February 2008, Bridgeport moved to its current location at 3217 Commander Shepard Boulevard. [5]
An elementary school principal and former high school administrator has been tapped to manage Hampton's Bridgeport Academy. Kimberly Sharpe has been Tucker-Capps Elementary School's principal since 2006.
Principal Rory Stapleton said teachers develop individual learning plans for each student, focusing on improving their academic skills in core subjects and the few elective classes the school offers.
Bridgeport Academy will move in January to 3217 Commander Shepard Blvd., spreading out in a 28,678-square-foot [2,664.3 m2] building on 4.6 acres [1.9 ha].
