Alatyrsky District ( Russian: Ала́тырский райо́н; Chuvash: Улатăр районӗ, Ulatăr rayonĕ) is an administrative [1] and municipal [4] district ( raion), one of the twenty-one in the Chuvash Republic, Russia. It is located in the south of the republic. The area of the district is 1,940 square kilometers (750 sq mi). [2] Its administrative center is the town of Alatyr (which is not administratively a part of the district). [1] Population: 17,244 ( 2010 Russian census); [3] 21,630 ( 2002 Census); [6] 26,007 ( 1989 Soviet census). [7]
Within the framework of administrative divisions, Alatyrsky District is one of the twenty-one in the republic. [1] The town of Alatyr serves as its administrative center, despite being incorporated separately as a town of republic significance—an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts. [1]
As a municipal division, the district is incorporated as Alatyrsky Municipal District. [4] The town of republic significance of Alatyr is incorporated separately from the district as Alatyr Urban Okrug. [4]
