1st Ukrainian Rockabilly Front is a music album released in Kyivv in 1998 by the Dynasty recording studio commissioned by the audio company Rostok Records. It is a collection of selected songs, which includes "16 compositions from 9 rockabilly bands in Ukraine." [1] The final track of the album, the Mad Heads song "Turn Around", is performed by the album participants together.

The album became a milestone in the history of the rockabilly movement in Ukraine, [2] and, at the same time, a noticeable art monument of the Ukrainian "grease subculture" at the turn of the 20th-21st centuries. [3]

History

In the first half of the 1990s, in several regions of Ukraine (Kiev, Kharkov, Simferopol, Rivne), amateur musical groups arose independently of each other, cultivating the sound of the 1950s – rockabilly (or its variety – psychobilly). [1]

In the second half of the 1990s, the Rockabilly Association was created in Kyiv, [4] which declared its task to promote rockabilly teams by organizing or supporting concerts, recordings, and trips abroad. Regular Kyiv festivals “Big Rockabilly Psychosis” and “Rockabilly Vybukh” arose as a result. [5]

In 1998, the Association's producer, Ivanna Dovzhenko, invited the participants of the next upcoming festival to record a joint CD album, which would become the calling card of the "rockabilly-minded part of Ukraine". At the same time, most of the musicians to whom the offer was made had no experience in studio recording. [6]

Despite the risks, in the fall of 1998 the recording of the album was completed and in early November its presentation took place in Kyiv. It received several favorable reviews in the press, [4] and was included in the largest music catalogs. [7] After some time it was re-released in Russia by CD-Real.
