Ryukyu Kingdom flag

Hello. Let me preface by stating that I am completely uninterested in starting an editing war which is why I have chosen to directly address you on your talk page. You replaced the Merchant flag (File:Merchant flag of the Ryukyu Kingdom.svg) of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which is sourced, with the disputed flag (File:Flag of Ryukyu.svg). You have not motivated why this switch was made, and I am unsure as to why the flag should be used in the first place. Since the authenticity and historical credibility of the flag is disputed, and is virtually only displayed on Wikipedia, it should be removed until the dispute is settled. Alternatively, it should be replaced with the Merchant flag, which you removed, since it has actual historical credibility and is sourced. The "Ryukyu Kingdom flag" is also low quality, to my understanding the monshō in the flag is not even completely correct (compare it with the higher quality File:Hidari mitsudomoe.svg). It should also be worth noting that many nations didn't have flags until recently, as a standardized rectangular flag used to represent an entire nation is a relatively new concept. Government of the Kingdom of Ryūkyū

I am currently working on mapping out the governmental structures and administrative cultures of Vietnam during the monarchial period and I'm planning on doing so for Korea in the future as well, but as I'm less familiar with Okinawan history I wanted to ask you if you knew anything about the Ryūkyūan government structure during the Kingdom?

Did they also fully copy China like Korea and Vietnam by having a six ministries system? Or did they have something more akin to the Tokugawa Shogunate where the Shogun didn't have any ministries until the very end of the regime? Please ping. -- Donald Trung ( talk) 17:52, 30 May 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Donald Trung: They worked under the Council of Three (三司官) and prime minister (摂政) who controlled the military and created laws, while the Council of Fifteen headed various bureaucratic departments. The local warlords were moved to Shuri and replaced by royal governors. There was also a system for the priestess system. Are you planning to make an article or a map for the Vietnamese and Korean governments? I made a chart for the military and religious systems. ミラー強斗武 ( StG88ぬ会話) 13:16, 1 June 2023 (UTC) reply
Weird, the ping still doesn't work though I haven't been able to receive pings at Wikipedia for around 4 (four) or so years. Anyhow, thank you for the information. I actually have several templates ready (or nearly ready for launch) for the Nguyễn Dynasty's government including general government, individual ministries, and provincial mandarins, but I haven't launched these yet as I'm still gathering sources and those templates would now be "sees of redlinks" and will likely either get deleted or mostly blanked if launched.
Regarding Joseon I am still learning more (South) Korean using Duolingo to be able to read modern works on Korean history as Hanja has become a rarity this century.
Is the information you provided on the government of the Ryukyu Kingdom in article space? Or is it "hidden in biographies" (I often find that sometimes information about specific institutions are mentioned in biographical articles but not in articles about the time periods or historical countries itself). -- —  Donald Trung ( talk) 13:33, 1 June 2023 (UTC) reply
Just found the Sanshikan article, apparently the government isn't mapped out with a handy navigational template. -- Donald Trung ( talk) 13:36, 1 June 2023 (UTC) reply
Yeah there's articles on pieces, but no overarching article or template yet. ミラー強斗武 ( StG88ぬ会話) 10:22, 3 June 2023 (UTC) reply
I always say "Content creation begets more content creation", so if it becomes the norm to have articles on historical governments in the Sinosphere then things like " Government of the Tokugawa Shogunate", Government of Joseon", Etc. will become blue links like " Government of the Qing dynasty" and " Government of the Nguyễn dynasty". People see one article and think "Why isn't there an equivalent article for this topic?!" and then they will make it.
But thank you for explaining how the Ryūkyūan government worked, it makes sense that they didn't completely copy China like Korea and Vietnam because they have a much smaller population and territory, so they wouldn't need an equally intricate bureaucracy to administrate their kingdom. -- —  Donald Trung ( talk) 21:33, 4 June 2023 (UTC) reply

A working concept

This image works surprisingly well.

I realised that I know why the Rūchū nu iwari image failed, it's not necessarily because the concept didn't work, it's because I didn't try to "get rid of the clutter". I tried to symbolise Ryūkyūan culture and history by showcasing its long history and diversity, but with the "History of Hanoi" image (see the attached thumbnail to this message) I realised that "less is more" isn't as stupid of a saying as it is. I spent around 2 (two) hours today working on this graphic and I had many ideas that popped into my head, Hanoian history has a legendary sword similar to Excalibur which is often central to the Hanoian identity, I thought of somehow incorporating this sword and a Vietnamese dragon into the image as well (as throughout its history Hanoi was named multiple times after Chinese / Vietnamese dragons), but after multiple visualisations I realised that the "clutter" would actually make it less representative.

The Rūchū nu iwari image now looks like an internet logo from the 1995-2008 period, but the Hanoian history logo works better because I just picked a recognisable and old symbol of a building that has almost stood a millennium in the city and is a major tourist attraction appearing on multiple North Vietnamese and Vietnamese banknotes and French Indo-Chinese postage stamps.

As you're often in the Okinawa prefecture and are way more familiar with Okinawan culture than I am I think that maybe in the future you'll find something as easily recognisable as the One Pillar Pagoda and add it to the " File:Ruuchuu nu iwari (琉球ぬ歴史).png". Until very recently I absolutely hated minimalism, but the more I work with these types of images the more I realise that sometimes less indeed is more. -- Donald Trung ( talk) 19:14, 7 June 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Donald Trung: I appreciate all your hard work! I'm honestly satisfied with the current banner (other than the furigana second long vowel ー being out of place). I think the obvious candidate for a recognizable symbol of Ryukyuan/Okinawan history is Shuri Castle. ミラー強斗武 ( StG88ぬ会話) 12:04, 9 June 2023 (UTC) reply
Robots actually help a lot with making art these days, I was lucky that the Government-General of French Indo-China made a beautiful commemorative postage stamp for the San Francisco International Exhibition displaying the iconic Hanoian landmark and tourist attraction, but I haven't been able to find a food drawing or sketch of the Shuri Castle.
I'm sure that the Japanese Empire likely used it on postage stamps (Hanoi's local government frequently used the One-Pillad Pagoda on its local revenue stamps under French rule and later the North Vietnamese Communists continued this tradition giving it a rich history of representation in the arts), but even if I can't find it I'm sure that I can ask a robot to paint it for me as well.
If I'll tackle this again in the future (especially since I now know a number of gratis robots that can help a lot with image improvements), I will probably emulate the Hanoian design and I'll ask you to help me with the Furigana. Unfortunately, I don't speak any of the Ryūkyūan languages so I am largely dependent on those who are more familiar with them.
Do you by any chance have a working knowledge of (at least some) Ryūkyūan languages and Classical Chinese? I assume that these are probably a bit necessary to understand Pre-Japanese Okinawa. -- —  Donald Trung ( talk) 12:32, 9 June 2023 (UTC) reply
I started a draft of a template here: User:Sturmgewehr88/sandbox#GoR_Template. ミラー強斗武 ( StG88ぬ会話) 07:18, 27 June 2023 (UTC) reply
That template actually looks great and explanatory, the thing about navigational templates is that it's best to launch them early and let others improve them so they can add things you've missed. Though I currently am still developing Nguyễn Dynasty government articles so I can't launch my draft templates yet as it would just be "a sea of red". But this concept looks really cool and helps explain quite a lot. —  Donald Trung ( talk) 10:18, 29 June 2023 (UTC) reply

Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September.
