@ Hhfjbaker: You have totally messed up the references in Third Battle of Winchester. It is a big mess. The problem is not just two or three things, it is 20 or 30 things. What were you thinking? You need to fix it ASAP or I will have start reverting all of your edits! It is hard to believe someone with your experience could mess this up so badly! Is this different referencing system better than Harvard? Remember that the MOS says "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style, merely on the grounds of personal preference or to make it match other articles, without first seeking consensus for the change." MOS and Civil War group give sfnp (which actually works/is derived from Harvard) as a means to shorten articles as it moves refs (and deletes the <ref tags) from within the text to the Sources section and makes it easier to jump from citation to source. I could have left as harvard, but sfnp uses fewer characters, and I did a global change and am in the midst of correcting them. I should have used Sandbox, but am in the midst of it now and ask that you let me finish, please. It seems to me it would have been a lot more productive to upgrade First Battle of Winchester or Second Battle of Winchester to GA instead of messing with something that is already GA. TwoScars ( talk) 14:27, 9 April 2024 (UTC) reply

Help:Shortened footnotes is the page on the format. I thought I was following these guidelines, from the To be avoided section of Wikipedia:Citing sources

Reviewing the article, I thought it was inconsistent. and was moving away from deprecated styles, such as parenthetical referencing. I may be wrong. I thought I was following the guidelines. Having gone back to the umbrella MOS, I cannot find a specific directive to make articles "cleaner." I may have misunderstood. I apologize. I should have left it alone.
