Illinois House elections

Hello, I'm reaching out because you've been the lead editor of 2020 Illinois House of Representatives election. I maintain Portal:Illinois, including the News section, and I want to be correct about this: Was the last election to be counted and called the one in District 68, Vella vs. Cabello? I just want the date for when the composition of the House was known. Fishal ( talk) 03:11, 24 November 2020 (UTC) reply

@ Fishal: Thanks for pointing that district out. I did not make that edit but I must have missed it when I was going through. According to my sources (WGN & the Chicago Sun Times) the race is too close to call and in fact Cabello is leading. I will remove a winner from the section and will update it accordingly when the race is called. Grahaml35 ( talk) 06:32, 24 November 2020 (UTC) reply
It was called for Vella on November 17, according to the Rockford Register Star and WIFR. Fishal ( talk) 13:11, 24 November 2020 (UTC) reply
I do see that, but that is the only source that has called it that way and the only source that has him winning. I will wait and encourage everyone to wait til it is official and called results come in from the majority of sources. Grahaml35 ( talk) 04:16, 25 November 2020 (UTC) reply
OK, it looks like that election has been updated to show a Democratic gain. Does that mean that the box at the top needs to change? Did Republicans gain a seat, or is the composition the same as before the election? Fishal ( talk) 22:02, 2 December 2020 (UTC) reply
What new sources are there other than the 2 you listed? Additionally it would stay the same. Grahaml35 ( talk) 23:08, 2 December 2020 (UTC) reply
Here is one that sums up several races. It has Vella winning by just 239 votes, but the Republicans still pick up a seat, so some other races need to be checked. The official data are now certified, so they're at il.gov; this should be the basis for numbers on the article, I would think, since they're the official results. Information icon Hi Grahaml35! I noticed that you recently marked an edit as minor at Felix Rosenqvist that may not have been. "Minor edit" has a very specific definition on Wikipedia – it refers only to superficial edits that could never be the subject of a dispute, such as typo corrections or reverting obvious vandalism. Any edit that changes the meaning of an article is not a minor edit, even if it only concerns a single word. Please see Help:Minor edit for more information. This trivial matter aside, great photo! Job title capitalizations

Hi, I saw you reverted my edit on the Indiana elections page. What "standard" are you referring to for caps? I'm operating from MOS:JOBTITLES, where job titles (e.g., congressman, senator, mayor) are only capitalized under certain conditions. You would say "President Joe Biden," but not "Barack Obama, 44th President of the United States," because "president" is referring to the office, rather than Obama's personal title. -- Jprg1966 (talk) 23:33, 4 June 2022 (UTC) reply

  • This has been a debated issue for a long time. In political election like this in the US it is always capitalized and considered a title. Look around other pages to see the similarity. Grahaml35 ( talk) 23:41, 4 June 2022 (UTC) reply

Specifically, what articles are you referring to and what kind of maps? Grahaml35 ( talk) 15:11, 5 July 2022 (UTC) reply
I have added a map to the 2020 Indiana state house election page [1]], and on my user page I have maps for each Indiana state house election dating back to 2006. I can also do the Indiana State Senate. -- Hoosier24 ( talk) 17:40, 5 July 2022 (UTC) reply
Yes, I believe those are beneficial. My only critiques would be 1.) can you just number the districts and leave all inside the map and not label the cities 2.) if not, could you clean up the sides. I am knit-picking at that point, but they look great and thanks for contributing!

Thank you for addding an infobox to this article. I notice, though, that some of the details seem to be a little different from what's in the article. What was your source for what's in the infobox? We should probably try to reconcile the sources. Just for instance, the infobox says he was appointed to the Indiana Supreme Court, while the text says he was elected. Brianyoumans ( talk) 15:58, 7 February 2023 (UTC) reply

  • I have done some research. I think that probably he was both elected AND appointed to the state supreme court - he was elected for the term 1871-6 (technically January 1, 1877), but it looks like he may have been appointed to the court in November 1870 to fill a vacancy. So, both stories are true. (See [2] for the existence of the certificate appointing him.) As to the "briefly elected Speaker in 1863", I picked that up from sources online, but it looks like what they meant was that it was for only one session of the legislature. OTOH, saying he served from 1862 isn't really correct - a New York Times article says the Indiana legislature opened their session on January 8, 1863 and Burkirk was elected Speaker that morning. I will make some revisions so that the text and infobox agree and are more accurate. Brianyoumans ( talk) 16:23, 7 February 2023 (UTC) reply

Invitation

Hello Grahaml35, we need experienced volunteers.
  • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
  • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
  • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
  • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
  • If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message at the reviewer's discussion board.
  • Cheers, and hope to see you around.

New page reviewer granted

Hi Grahaml35. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts ( 1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. signed, Rosguill talk 04:16, 19 December 2023 (UTC) reply

New Pages Patrol newsletter April 2024

Hello Grahaml35,

New Page Review queue January to March 2024

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Hello, I would like to help with the Indiana election pages. Please let me know if the map I put on the 2020 pages is alright. I can make modifications. I will be making the maps 2010-2020 and posting them on my user page. Hoosier24 ( talk) 01:47, 3 July 2022 (UTC) reply
