Hi Dr.khatmando, thanks for your note about Imperial Crown style. I find it fascinating – it's aesthetically pleasing, and makes an interesting change from Art Deco and the other styles of the 1930s. There may be more examples in Taiwan, and it has occurred to me that it might have also appeared in Korea during the Japanese era, however I can't find any references to this. - MerlinVtwelve, Indeed there is a sense of grandeur and at the same time a connection with the surrounding architecture (at least in Japan, although nowadays the areas around those buildings have changed). When I was first in Japan in the late 70s, before widespread AC in government buildings, they were always cooler inside than anywhere else during the hot summers. And I like anything that is a good marriage between East and West too.
- I saw the Taiwanese examples which had just a slightly different feel again, and I would expect that there are some Korean examples if they survived the Korean War. Thanks for creating the category, that's helpful. I've been meaning to translate some of the information over to the article from the Japanese wiki. I've started but haven't done any translation in this area for 20 years so it might be slow to start. If you come across anything you think would helpful please add it in or let me know. Chronology of adult videos in Japan has two titles which need translation. I'm not very good at cutting and pasting, so I'd prefer if you just went to the page and added them. Dr.K—first, thank you for your excellent work on en.WP; I've looked at a bit of your contribs list. Second, if you really want to reinstate the icons, I can't stop you. But I urge you to reconsider just what their function would be—what the advantage for readers would be in the context of a space-constrained infobox. There are a few things to consider. The first is that the reader has to hover their mouse over the icon to learn what country is being referred to. (The referent of most national flags is not obvious to non-experts, and ... try distinguishing the Austr. and NZ flags at thumbnail size.) Or if the country-name is printed next to the icon, it prompts the question of redundancy. Second, I do appreciate that a patch of colour might brighten the effect of a boring old infobox, but MOSFLAGS is justifiably down on the decorative function. Third, flags for regions/states/provinces are widely accepted, and where they're included, in my view they're more functional when not juddered up against a national flag.

- Hi @ Tony1:, That's high praise indeed to hear this from you. You make some good points about differentiating between the Australian and New Zealand flags. Perhaps it would be better to have a proper image for human settlements, in those articles, rather than a flagicon.
- However they're helpful in articles on human settlements. For example my 10 year old son had a geography project earlier this year, where he had to pick one country to introduce, and then focus on some regional aspects. It was helpful to have flag images in the infobox for the Japan article. He then chose architecture, art, and culture of Chūbu region. We're a bilingual family, so we used both English WP and Japanese WP. For us, the English article on Chubu doesn't need a flagicon for Japan. But when looking for the same articles on the Japanese WP, for example here [2], the flagicon is important as a quick reference to confirm that we have found an article related to Japan, rather than an region in China.. The smaller the region, the more useful flags become because there can be many localities witnin Japan, China, and Taiwan that use the same Sino-logographic characters. Have a look at three of about fifty articles on Sakuragaoka:
- In these articles, flagicons or images of flags are useful to discriminate between them, as well as being the focus of some of the content within the articles. I don't think it would be right for me to emphasize this without mentioning the cultural emphasis that is limited to the use of logographical characters in Sinosphere countries. Modern pictograms had a long life in Japan, as ink-and-stamp technology, before being expressed digitally as Emoji.
- That being said, in article infoboxes other than those on human settlements, military and military conflicts, I don't know if they would be helpful. That's where I fall back on reading and rereading the instructions. But better than this are the discussions with speople such as yourself. Not only does that make for better decisions I make, but hopefully we're modeling the type of collaboration, for other people. (I might be reading too much into the later part of that statement)
- There's one last point I think is worthwhile adding. I think infoboxes are important. I was working on a national epidemiology and public health program with the Vietnamese government to develop their first public health textbook. This was a capstone outcome from 10 years of epidemiological studies. When it came to considering what makes for a useful presentation of that information in a university textbook, there was sound quantitative research that graduate students considered Textboxes, as one of the most important learning tools. So I consider them as important as I think you do, and care needs to be taken to make them work the best for people. That's a challenge when in a limited space you need to present the best information in the best way. I'm a bit isolated sometimes due to some impairements, so I try to minimize contributing unnecessary or inaccurate stuff. The effort to contribute, makes it disappointing if I go down the wrong path.

Hi@ MerlinVtwelve: I hope your travel preparations are going well. After some thought about what photos we might need for our work on the Japanese architecture articles, I think it could be helpful to take an “exploratory” approach. Perhaps when your on the ground in Tokyo you could ask someone local about notable or interesting examples of “Wayou Sechu kenchiku” 和洋折衷建築. So if you go to the National Museum early in your trip the museum staff would be helpful to point you to some convenient examples. You could mention that you contribute to many English WP articles on the Japanese architecture? I think you might get better success this way by casting a broad net from enquiring about Japanese Western Eclectic Architecture rather than the more specific ICS (which only those with a keen interest in architecture or history will understand). Hi @ Dr.khatmando:, I am back on home turf, feeling as if I've been on another planet, not just another country. First day there, I ran the phrase “Wayou Sechu kenchiku” '和洋折衷建築' past three very helpful ladies at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center. Interestingly, one of them at first pointed to a picture of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery as an example. The other two agreed, but then they pointed to the Tokyo National Museum as well. Although one of them in particular spoke good English, I am not sure whether they were suggesting that both buildings fit that description, or they were revising to just one. However, they were not architectural specialists as far as I could tell, so perhaps JWE is the broader term – while ICS is a specific type of JWE? Anyway, I did visit both buildings – and was in awe of them both. I did also run the phrase past an employee at the museum, however, couldn't establish anything useful there. Took a few pictures along the way, and will upload them to Wikimedia if I captured anything that is not already there. Unfortunately pictures not allowed inside the Meiji Gallery, although a did get a couple of stealthy ones. Other architectural highlights of the trip were the Art Deco facade of the Isetan department store, and the most lavish Art Deco interiors I've ever seen, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, former residence of Prince Yasuhiko Asaka. Hi Mikael, My sincere apologies for not being of much help to the board, or WP in general. I was undergoing radiation therapy when I made most of my contributions, and my health improved then declined after that and have had many life adjustments over the past couple of years. Hi Dr.khatmando, thanks for your note about Imperial Crown style. I find it fascinating – it's aesthetically pleasing, and makes an interesting change from Art Deco and the other styles of the 1930s. There may be more examples in Taiwan, and it has occurred to me that it might have also appeared in Korea during the Japanese era, however I can't find any references to this. - MerlinVtwelve, Indeed there is a sense of grandeur and at the same time a connection with the surrounding architecture (at least in Japan, although nowadays the areas around those buildings have changed). When I was first in Japan in the late 70s, before widespread AC in government buildings, they were always cooler inside than anywhere else during the hot summers. And I like anything that is a good marriage between East and West too.
- I saw the Taiwanese examples which had just a slightly different feel again, and I would expect that there are some Korean examples if they survived the Korean War. Thanks for creating the category, that's helpful. I've been meaning to translate some of the information over to the article from the Japanese wiki. I've started but haven't done any translation in this area for 20 years so it might be slow to start. If you come across anything you think would helpful please add it in or let me know. Chronology of adult videos in Japan has two titles which need translation. I'm not very good at cutting and pasting, so I'd prefer if you just went to the page and added them. If this is not a burden there are plenty in other articles I'll send you, all dealing with adult video in Japan (which in my opinion is the best in the world). - @ Deisenbe: I've had a first pass over the page you linked about, and corrected most of the transliteration markup in the lead paragraph, and finished a partial translation of one of the movie titles. The article has a lot of transliteration that needs cleaning up. So I will look over the page again in between the other translations I'm doing. At least that's a start. Dr.K—first, thank you for your excellent work on en.WP; I've looked at a bit of your contribs list. Second, if you really want to reinstate the icons, I can't stop you. But I urge you to reconsider just what their function would be—what the advantage for readers would be in the context of a space-constrained infobox. There are a few things to consider. The first is that the reader has to hover their mouse over the icon to learn what country is being referred to. (The referent of most national flags is not obvious to non-experts, and ... try distinguishing the Austr. and NZ flags at thumbnail size.) Or if the country-name is printed next to the icon, it prompts the question of redundancy. Second, I do appreciate that a patch of colour might brighten the effect of a boring old infobox, but MOSFLAGS is justifiably down on the decorative function. Third, flags for regions/states/provinces are widely accepted, and where they're included, in my view they're more functional when not juddered up against a national flag.

- Hi @ Tony1:, That's high praise indeed to hear this from you. You make some good points about differentiating between the Australian and New Zealand flags. Perhaps it would be better to have a proper image for human settlements, in those articles, rather than a flagicon.
- However they're helpful in articles on human settlements. For example my 10 year old son had a geography project earlier this year, where he had to pick one country to introduce, and then focus on some regional aspects. It was helpful to have flag images in the infobox for the Japan article. He then chose architecture, art, and culture of Chūbu region. We're a bilingual family, so we used both English WP and Japanese WP. For us, the English article on Chubu doesn't need a flagicon for Japan. But when looking for the same articles on the Japanese WP, for example here [2], the flagicon is important as a quick reference to confirm that we have found an article related to Japan, rather than an region in China.. The smaller the region, the more useful flags become because there can be many localities witnin Japan, China, and Taiwan that use the same Sino-logographic characters. Have a look at three of about fifty articles on Sakuragaoka:
- In these articles, flagicons or images of flags are useful to discriminate between them, as well as being the focus of some of the content within the articles. I don't think it would be right for me to emphasize this without mentioning the cultural emphasis that is limited to the use of logographical characters in Sinosphere countries. Modern pictograms had a long life in Japan, as ink-and-stamp technology, before being expressed digitally as Emoji.
- That being said, in article infoboxes other than those on human settlements, military and military conflicts, I don't know if they would be helpful. That's where I fall back on reading and rereading the instructions. But better than this are the discussions with speople such as yourself. Not only does that make for better decisions I make, but hopefully we're modeling the type of collaboration, for other people. (I might be reading too much into the later part of that statement)
- There's one last point I think is worthwhile adding. I think infoboxes are important. I was working on a national epidemiology and public health program with the Vietnamese government to develop their first public health textbook. This was a capstone outcome from 10 years of epidemiological studies. When it came to considering what makes for a useful presentation of that information in a university textbook, there was sound quantitative research that graduate students considered Textboxes, as one of the most important learning tools. So I consider them as important as I think you do, and care needs to be taken to make them work the best for people. That's a challenge when in a limited space you need to present the best information in the best way. I'm a bit isolated sometimes due to some impairements, so I try to minimize contributing unnecessary or inaccurate stuff. The effort to contribute, makes it disappointing if I go down the wrong path.

Hi Dr.khatmando, I hope you are well. I have been on a long WikiBreak so have not been doing much due to other commitments. However, I think perhaps Japanese-Western Eclectic Architecture could benefit from some extra content, and I will try and contribute at some stage down the track. As a matter of fact, next week I am going on my first holiday to Tokyo! Do we need any photos of buildings? (Either IC style or JWE). Of course the National Museum will be one of the first places I will be visiting – and I see it is indeed an example of Imperial Crown Style. I think we could do with some up close shots of distinct ICS features as you say, so your plans to visit the National Museum maybe a good opportunity to get something like that... Hi@ MerlinVtwelve: I hope your travel preparations are going well. After some thought about what photos we might need for our work on the Japanese architecture articles, I think it could be helpful to take an “exploratory” approach. Perhaps when your on the ground in Tokyo you could ask someone local about notable or interesting examples of “Wayou Sechu kenchiku” 和洋折衷建築. So if you go to the National Museum early in your trip the museum staff would be helpful to point you to some convenient examples. You could mention that you contribute to many English WP articles on the Japanese architecture? I think you might get better success this way by casting a broad net from enquiring about Japanese Western Eclectic Architecture rather than the more specific ICS (which only those with a keen interest in architecture or history will understand). Hi @ Dr.khatmando:, I am back on home turf, feeling as if I've been on another planet, not just another country. First day there, I ran the phrase “Wayou Sechu kenchiku” '和洋折衷建築' past three very helpful ladies at the Asakusa Culture Tourist Information Center. Interestingly, one of them at first pointed to a picture of the Meiji Memorial Picture Gallery as an example. The other two agreed, but then they pointed to the Tokyo National Museum as well. Although one of them in particular spoke good English, I am not sure whether they were suggesting that both buildings fit that description, or they were revising to just one. However, they were not architectural specialists as far as I could tell, so perhaps JWE is the broader term – while ICS is a specific type of JWE? Anyway, I did visit both buildings – and was in awe of them both. I did also run the phrase past an employee at the museum, however, couldn't establish anything useful there. Took a few pictures along the way, and will upload them to Wikimedia if I captured anything that is not already there. Unfortunately pictures not allowed inside the Meiji Gallery, although a did get a couple of stealthy ones. Other architectural highlights of the trip were the Art Deco facade of the Isetan department store, and the most lavish Art Deco interiors I've ever seen, at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, former residence of Prince Yasuhiko Asaka. Hi Mikael, My sincere apologies for not being of much help to the board, or WP in general. I was undergoing radiation therapy when I made most of my contributions, and my health improved then declined after that and have had many life adjustments over the past couple of years. Despite these circumstances, I’m receiving new supports at home and with those I hope that soon I will be more useful to the the good work being done at WikiJMed. It will take a couple of more months to build my capacity with the new supports commencing soon, I hope all is well and our colleagues working in our Journal, and the good work continues.
