The article is a fantastic start to uncovering the sexist mechanisms present in the candidate stage of United States elections. The article effectively covers the inherent sexism within the American poltical system as well as sexism towards female and transgender candidates, whether within media or through likability. The relevant subtopics flow well to the next, and the article includes straight-forward language. I think “Sexism in American political elections” could benefit from a lead section that more accurately covers the piece’s concentration, as the lead focuses on sexism broadly instead of defining its role in American politics. Additionally, I think the author could expand upon likeability’s link to winning office and sexism towards transgender candidates, possibly including more information on the lack of political role models for transgender women and any transgender women trying to combat this. To improve the flow, I think any information regarding sexist media ads should fall under “The role of media” section. Lastly, the article does not include any images, so pictures depicting sexist campaign ads or female politicians speaking against sexism could bolster the article. Overall, the article proves well developed but could benefit from expansion within certain sections, such as “Sexism towards transgender candidates” and “Likeability,” as well as within defining the patriarchy’s role in the foundation of American politics and how it affects the topic (mentioned in “Sexism in politics”).
