Additional welcomes

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions so far. I hope you like the place and decide to stay.

Here are some links to pages you may find useful:

You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but if you wish to acquire additional privileges, you can simply create a named account. It's free, requires no personal information, and lets you:

Note that in order for the first three features to be available, you must have had an account for a minimum number of days and made a minimum number of edits.

If you edit without using a named account, your IP address (199.208.172.35) is used to identify you instead.

I hope that you, as a Wikipedian, decide to continue contributing to our project: an encyclopedia of human knowledge that anyone can edit. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, or you can click here to ask for help on your talk page, and a volunteer should respond shortly. We also have an intuitive guide on editing if you're interested. By the way, please make sure to sign and date your talk page comments with four tildes (~~~~).

Welcome the third

Welcome to Wikipedia!

Hello IP user. Welcome to Wikipedia and thank you for your contributions!

I'm Sm8900, one of the other editors here, and I hope you decide to stay and help contribute to this amazing repository of knowledge. Although you're free to perform most tasks on Wikipedia without registering, it's highly recommended you create an account as there are many added benefits. It's private and secure and it's also free, simple, and quick to do.

Some pages of helpful information to get you started:
  Introduction to Wikipedia
  The five pillars of Wikipedia
  Editing tutorial
  How to edit a page
  Simplified Manual of Style
  The basics of Wikicode
  How to develop an article
  How to create an article
  Help pages
  What Wikipedia is not
Some common sense Dos and Don'ts:
  Do be bold
  Do assume good faith
  Do be civil
  Do keep cool!
Do maintain a neutral point of view
  Don't spam
  Don't infringe copyright
Don't edit where you have a conflict of interest
  Don't commit vandalism
  Don't get blocked
If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

Alternatively, leave me a message at my talk page or type {{helpme}} here on your talk page and someone will try to help.

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome
  Help contribute to articles
  Perform maintenance tasks

Become a member of a project that interests you
  Help design new templates
Subscribe and contribute to The Signpost
Translate articles from Wikipedias in other languages

To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. If you register an account, you can create your own personal sandbox for use any time. It's perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you could put a link to it on your user page.

Please remember to:

  • Always sign your posts on talk pages. You can do this either by clicking on the button on the edit toolbar or by typing four tildes ~~~~ at the end of your post. This will automatically insert your IP address linked to your contributions page (however, if you create an account, your IP address will be hidden and you will be able to build a custom signature that can link to your own user page), a link to this IP's talk page, and a timestamp.
  • Leave descriptive edit summaries for your edits. Doing so helps other editors understand what changes you have made and why you made them.
The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!

Sincerely, Sm8900 ( talk) 21:50, 24 May 2022 (UTC)   (Leave me a message) reply

Welcome the fourth
A cup of hot tea to welcome you!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions, especially what you did for The Little Prince. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask a question on your talk page. I know you've been welcomed before, but I wanted to add this additional welcome, because it has several links about the benefits of registering for a free account, and I think you'd make a great editor here, and it would benefit both you as well as other editors trying to communicate with you if you had an account here with your own username. I certainly do not mind. I did not know doing that would cause that big of an issue. I actually couldn't figure out how to get it so the HTML would render as the text as clearly the code template didn't work. ― Blaze Wolf TalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:51, 3 May 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Blaze Wolf, I went on a mad scramble through the Wiki archives until I stumbled across Wikipedia:Tip of the day/August 15, which has some useful codey bits. The things you learn around here! 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 20:56, 3 May 2022 (UTC) reply
A related trick: A link to a template to show someone what to enter, brackets and all, and allow them to click to reach its documentation page, can be made using {{template link|templatename}}, which for that template would come out as {{ template link}}. The shorter version is {{ tl}}. Cheers, BlackcurrantTea ( talk) 16:00, 15 May 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Blaze Wolf, I've learned the trick of typing "WP:" or "HELP:" into the search bar, along with a one-word description of what I'm trying to do. In this case, that led to Help:Collapsing. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 14:51, 12 May 2022 (UTC) reply

Creating an account

Since you're so familiar with wikipedia's policies and guidelines, why don't you create an account to help out in a better way? Slippy Sausage ( talk) 17:30, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Slippy Sausage, creating an account won't help me contribute in any better way than I've already been doing for a few years now. You'll find that many long-term IP editors feel very much the same. It's possible that English Wikipedia may someday go the way of Portuguese Wikipedia and ban IP editing; in that case, I'll have to make a choice between registering or going back to just being a reader. But not yet. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 17:37, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply

Why don't you wanna create an account? Slippy Sausage ( talk) 18:03, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Slippy Sausage, you seem to have trouble indenting replies - perhaps this is difficult on mobile, I'm not sure, I've never edited on a phone. Does the reply feature not work? You may have to manually add the extra ":" symbols. Please get used to doing that, it's important when having long conversations with other editors.
As for your question, see here just a bit further up my talk page. I'm not interested in creating an account; I have no need of one at the moment. I can do everything I want to do as an IP. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 18:09, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply
I've to manually indent my replies on mobile so I often forget to add it, does it indent manually while editing on a pc? And also, doesn't your ip address change after some time? Slippy Sausage ( talk) 18:14, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply
@ Slippy Sausage, when the little "Reply" button was added for all editors (six months ago now? a year?), I started just using that in conversations, and it does automatically create the correct indent level. Before that feature was available, I had to indent manually. There are still occasions when the reply button doesn't work and I have to do things myself.
This particular IP address has been stable for a remarkably long time - it used to shift quite often. I'm sure it'll change again eventually, and, of course, when I post from a different computer in a different location, my IP is different. It doesn't bother me; if it's important to a conversation, I just say that I've shifted to a new address. If you stick around, you may come across an IP editor who signs as "{the poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195}" - they've been editing for a long, long time and they use that signature to help folks identify them across changing IPs. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 18:27, 28 September 2022 (UTC) reply

Question

Did you receive an email notifying you of my latest reply, which was "Because you say "(not the publications list, the sources talking about him)," I googled and the hits were a mix of "Steve"s and "Stephen"s. I guess, then, that we can let it be. Maurice Magnus ( talk) 13:59, 29 September 2022 (UTC)?? reply

I ask because I want to know whether merely clicking "Reply" to a Teahouse comment results in the editor to whom I am replying receiving an email. If not, what do I have to enter to ensure that he or she receives an email? Thanks. Maurice Magnus ( talk) 14:10, 29 September 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Maurice Magnus, as an IP editor, I can only tell you what applies to IPs. I don't get any notification of replies (I don't even get notification of pings!). It may be different for those with accounts, depending on the preferences they've set, the add-ons they've installed and whether or not there's an email address attached to their account. I know there's a new tool in the works which lets account holders subscribe to particular threads (notifying them of replies) but I don't know how widely used it is as of yet.
Best practice is just to ping folks in your replies unless they tell you it's not necessary. Also, if you're posting on their talk page, they're automatically notified, even IPs (though I'm sure you know that already). 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 14:24, 29 September 2022 (UTC) reply

@ Thedefender35, I don't think anyone on the planet understands all the rules pertaining to Wikipedia, especially since new ones seem to pop up every day, like dandelions. Which specific rules, or sorts of rules, are you struggling with? 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 20:12, 13 October 2022 (UTC) reply
I was struggling with the picture and articles rules/help as seen here Td she /her 20:14, 13 October 2022 (UTC) reply
In that particular case, @ Thedefender35, I think you may have misunderstood either the question or the pages you linked, because neither of them was very relevant, especially not the first one. Is English possibly a second language for you? You don't have to answer if you don't want to, it just seems like that may be part of the problem.
If you want to stick around and keep answering questions at the Teahouse, I would recommend two things. First, spend more time reading than typing; I read posts at the Teahouse and Help Desk for months before I ever dared to post an answer. Second, be very sure that you have the correct answer before you post it - review the question several times, review your response several times, review any pages you're linking several times. There's usually no rush. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 20:22, 13 October 2022 (UTC) reply

Oh, and I know this sounds picky and annoying, but please ping me if you'd like for me to see a response, otherwise I just sometimes might miss it. Not ignoring you. TY Moops T 22:31, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, I need to start keeping a counter of the times I've been asked that, maybe I'll put it up there with my collection of welcome templates. 😅 Short answer is: don't need one, don't want one. I can always bug you fancy account-holder types if something needs done that I can't do. And yes, I've been here... a while now. Few years, I think. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 22:35, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Well to be sure, you don't need one, but why don't you want one? You are so very helpful, other than this one time I would hold against you for not liking my 'Happy New Years' greetings, but I can let that one slide... ;) Moops T 22:39, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Not really my thing, @ Moops. I've found I like being sort of semi-anonymous; it has its own perks, like dodging attention from many LTAs/vandals and generally having less responsibility, real or imagined. I don't do much other than post at the Teahouse and make minor corrections to things. No desire to collect hats, I have enough very nice ones for my needs. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 22:45, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
lol! I was wondering the same thing. ok, that answers my question. thanks for your reply above. and thanks for all your work! -- Sm8900 ( talk) 17:22, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
I like hats too. What kind of hats do you collect? Ever checked out this store based in Poland? They ship to the USA and many other countries too! Moops T 22:48, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, if you really want to know we could talk about it over on Discord in #offtopic or something; it's drifting quite far from a discussion about Wikipedia. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 22:53, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Oh I was bringing things to your talk page to stay off of the Teahouse. TY Moops T 22:57, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
I have never used Discord. I am not familiar with it. Moops T 22:57, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, WP:DISCORD. It's just a chat program, it's possible to be much more FORUM-y there than here. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:00, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Is it build specifically for wikipedia? Or for lots of things? Moops T 23:01, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, for lots of things - I originally signed up to use a Lord of the Rings related server, for instance. There are quite a few Wikipedia servers, for all the different languages. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:06, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Question

Since you appear to know a lot about alot, can you help me understand why a user would deleted their user page, but their talk page remains intact? I've come across that a couple times. I could not post on those pages if that means something about them having been blocked maybe or something? Here is one such example. Moops T 22:51, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Moops, talk pages can't (well, won't - it's probably technically possible) be deleted. It's not a consequence of being blocked, and I can think of several reasons. For instance, I know for sure there are some people who like not having a user page, they prefer the redlinked name, and if a well-meaning (or possibly not so well-meaning) person creates their user page anyway, they ask for it do be deleted. Also, it's possible they may not want the history of the page to be available for a number of reasons. AFAIK, a user page is just as eligible for deletion as any other page in someone's user space (except their talk page, as I said). 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 22:58, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
So if I understand you correctly, you can have your user page deleted, but not your talk page? TY Moops T 23:01, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, yep. More or less. Not something I've ever had to deal with personally, for obvious reasons. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:04, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Which brings up an interesting point. So an IP never has a userpage then I gather? I never really looked into that before. Fascinating. :) Moops T 23:05, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, IPs can't edit user pages, including their own. It's possible for someone else to create an IP's user page, though - usually an admin doing admin things. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:07, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Here is a bit of a technical question. Doesn't someone tend to sit in a range of IP's? How would you always edit from the same IP? Is that a static IP? Like is that something special that the U.S. Navy has that you are stationed with? I'd think that since IP's are usually dynamic, that you'd pop in and out of a range of IPs and not consistently have access to the same IP. I don't know. I signed up for an account to edit right from the start because I was not really aware that 'anyone can edit' meant 'including with an IP', I thought that meant 'anyone can edit who signs up for a free account'... which was still a pretty neat concept to me when I jumped onboard with this project. :) Moops T 23:33, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, it's a bit strange because that is indeed how things used to work. Sometimes I'd end up with a new IP every few edits, and several of them were blocked for misuse (didn't bother me too much, I was mostly reading). But at one point - apparently in April of last year, according to the xtools page - this IP suddenly became static, and it's been static ever since. No idea why, those decisions are made by IT gurus off in Gov't IT Guru Land. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:40, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
As Spock used to say, "Fascinating"... :) Moops T 23:41, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
That does make for a difficult time in known with whom I am speaking though... since presumably many more than one person at your U.S. Navy base can log in and edit from the same static IP now. Your 'reputation' could be tarnished by some other young ensign coming along and vandalizing some page on Betty Boop and there would be no way to distinguish them from the fine and helpful person over at the Teahouse! Moops T 23:44, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Moops, could happen! There's at least one other occasional editor on this address, but they're a harmless gnome like me. Plus there was whoever tried the edits which spawned User talk:199.208.172.35#September 2021. I thought that was hilarious. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 23:48, 3 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Outdenting

When using {{ outdent}} include the number of colons the last post had. If it was 4 (::::), use {{ outdent|::::}} or {{ outdent|4}}. This connects the line to the previous post. - Arjayay ( talk) 18:58, 25 January 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Arjayay, I was doing a little test of the reply tool to see if it would outdent properly when just given {{ od}}. Obviously not. I'll have to do it manually in the future. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 19:02, 25 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Trying to clear this up

I am not Leansheat, a person whom I simply paid for work. If you would like to me delete Leansheat's work, please just say so. Otherwise, I will do so this evening. It was nothing but fixing link rot and lengthy quotations. Please bear in mind, that I am a member of the American middle-class, whereas Leansheat is likelier under more straitened economic circumstances. As I say, I can just delete the work, but there was no question of bias. The work was strictly neutral and technical beyond my abilities. Honestly, at this point, please delete the whole page if none of my suggestions can satisfy you. But in fairness I did not start the page; I was only trying to clean it up; and I have been recognized in significant ways. Brian Osgood ( talk) 00:11, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Brian Osgood, you still have not made clear what your conflict of interest - if any - with this article is. Until you do that, I'm not much interested in helping further. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 14:42, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Last night, I clarified my conflict of interest on the Lee Oser talk page (as I was instructed to do). Will that suffice? I would greatly appreciate any help! Brian Osgood ( talk) 15:02, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Brian Osgood, it's not quite right - you should ideally add {{UserboxCOI|1=Lee Oser}} (exactly as you see it there) to your user page, which is at User:Brian Osgood. Adding a template to the article's talk page is second best, but it's something I'm able to do myself, so I've done it.
If you want your suggested edits to be entered in the queue for review, I suggest either adding the {{ request edit}} template to your post on the article's talk page, or using the Edit Request Wizard if you find that easier. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 15:12, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
I did as you suggested regarding the COI. Brian Osgood ( talk) 15:20, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Brian Osgood, excellent. I've fixed the edit request template you put on the article talk page - a bunch of nowiki tags had appeared around it. Maybe a problem with the reply tool. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 15:23, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
Thanks very much! Brian Osgood ( talk) 15:29, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Brian Osgood, it will probably be awhile before someone comes by to action the request. Keep in mind that most of us are volunteers who just do this as a hobby (even our administrators), so building the encyclopedia is rather like herding cats. They'll get somewhere - eventually - if they want to. I'm going to put some links on your own personal talk page which may be useful for you in the future. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 15:37, 27 January 2023 (UTC) reply

Near the beginning of Content Assessment, I see this: "The quality assessments are mainly performed by Wikipedia editors, who tag talk pages of articles." That seems like a directive to tag the talk page of an article, not the article page. At least, that's how I interpret it. Hope this helps. David10244 ( talk) 11:01, 22 April 2023 (UTC) reply

Ah. Talk pages do get tagged with the various ratings; I don't think that line means talk pages and talk pages only, though, especially since we have GA and FA markers sprinkled all over the place. (Hello from my secret lair, @ David10244!) 65.102.135.249 ( talk) 13:49, 22 April 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Akinadewojo, why would you use external links to answer questions about Wikipedia? It's a terrible idea.
You are very new here. It's important that folks who ask questions at the Teahouse get correct responses, so those who answer questions should be very knowledgeable and experienced. You are not. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions, especially what you did for The Little Prince. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, although if you wish to acquire additional privileges, simply create an account. It's free, requires no personal information, and lets you:

In addition, your IP address will no longer be visible to other users.

In any case, I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date.

Huh. Neat. Unfortunately that can't work with everything (meaning this as more of a joke as it'll probably be helpful with a lot of things, but not trying to do something like "Help:Annoyance") ― Blaze Wolf TalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:53, 12 May 2022 (UTC) reply

I'd like to open a discussion about the reverted portions that you changed on this Wiki. The changes I made most accurately reflect the current structure of the company which is no longer owned by ViacomCBS.

A caution

@ LilianaUwU, I didn't want to bring this up at the Teahouse and I can't post on your talk page, so I'm pinging you here (I'm Tarlonniel from Discord, in case you're not aware). I see it was a sensitive subject for you, but I wanted to caution against making sweeping generalizations based on your own personal experiences, as you did here. Also, please try to keep the "friendly place" part of answering questions at the Teahouse a little more in mind. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 15:16, 17 February 2023 (UTC) reply

FAQ?

Maybe you could add some sort of FAQ table at the top of your talk page to address some common questions you've been asked (such as why you don't have an account, which I recall you telling me once that you do technically have an account but don't have access to it)? ― Blaze Wolf TalkBlaze Wolf#6545 21:11, 2 March 2023 (UTC) reply

Teahouse

Hi. I sometimes visit the teahouse to look at the topics but the topics on there seem to be already answered, so that is why you haven't seen me on there that much. Cwater1 ( talk) 16:56, 21 April 2023 (UTC) reply

Hi @ Cwater1. I did notice that you haven't been around as much, but I saw that when you did post answers, they were good answers, and you kept the Teahouse running smoothly. I know it's probably not very exciting, but I think you're learning. Good job. 👍 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 17:07, 21 April 2023 (UTC) reply

This got archived, but you asked "@David10244, can you point to the part of Wikipedia:Content assessment where you see that? 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:56, 21 April 2023 (UTC)".

Answering questions at the teahouse

Can an editor answer questions relating to the encyclopaedia using external links? Akinadewojo ( talk) 22:40, 4 May 2023 (UTC) reply

@ Akinadewojo, why would you use external links to answer questions about Wikipedia? It's a terrible idea.
You are very new here. It's important that folks who ask questions at the Teahouse get correct responses, so those who answer questions should be very knowledgeable and experienced. You are not. Feel free to read posts at the Teahouse, but please stop attempting to respond to them. 199.208.172.35 ( talk) 22:47, 4 May 2023 (UTC) reply
@ Akinadewojo, people answering questions at the Teahouse are generally those who are already experts. With 22 edits, you should be asking questions there, not answering them. Valereee ( talk) 12:33, 5 May 2023 (UTC) reply
