Better phrasing possible? Notability?

I'll be honest, I got the wrong impression about this individual when I first read this article. I didn't notice that 15 additional studies had effectively disproven his claim to fame. Personally, I would expect that information to surface higher up in the text, preferably in the first section.

The notability of the subject is also a little confusing to me. I'm disappointed that the 2 most notable sources for this are paywalled (LAT & WSJ). The passage regarding Mrs. Beck is perhaps overly descriptive, yet interesting in its own way.

Apologies if I'm a little sour. I'd like to hear others' thoughts about this.
